It never ceases to amaze me that a country so accustomed to cold weather is at the same time so utterly incapable of dealing with it when it arrives.

Umm, come mid summer in aus when a single car overheats and jams an entire highway for hours, another state government warns us not to buy airconditioners or run pools because the power cant cope, a bushfire sends a city into total smog blackout and we have to hire a water helicopter from california as we dont own one or they warn us not to go out in melbourne cause the pollutions so bad, should we all be so amazed a country so accustomed to severe heat is so utterly incapable of dealing with it

I wonder what the Aussies reaction would be if I was an Englishman living in Australia and I had a pop at Australia's inability to deal with something?

One single car does not equate to "the country can't cope." In the UK, they block off half a motorway if there's so much as a twig on the line and shut down railways if they have wet leaves on the tracks.

I would like to see some evidence that the state government is asking people not to buy aircons or run pools, please.

Hiring a water helicopter from California because Melbourne doesn't have one?

(1) No, it's Canada.

(2) Melbourne already has an entire fleet of fire-fighting aircraft:

In a first for Victoria, the Bracks Government through Melbourne Water is funding a dedicated helicopter to fight fires in water catchments this summer, the Acting Premier and Water Minister John Thwaites announced today.

“A serious fire in Melbourne’s water catchments would be devastating for Melbourne’s long term water supply,” Mr Thwaites said.

Mr Thwaites said the 1300-litre water bombing helicopter had been brought from Canada for at least 14 weeks.

[...]

The helicopter will add to Victoria’s specialised fire-fighting aircraft fleet managed by the State Aircraft Unit for the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Country Fire Authority.

Mr Thwaites said Melbourne Water had a comprehensive $1.5 million program to manage the threat of bushfires in its water supply catchments.

[...]

Melbourne Water also recently replaced older tankers with three new 3000 litre units. This supports other equipment including four wheel drives and bulldozers.

The Bracks Government last year announced an additional $168 million over four years to increase fire preparedness and fire-fighting capability.
Source.

A bushfire sends a city into a total smog blackout - well yes, that's what bushfires do; however, this is no reflection on Australia's ability to cope with them. You can't just stop smog in its tracks, anymore than you can tell a London fog to go away and come back at a more convenient time.

Pollution is irrelevant to this issue; we're talking about bushfires here.

BTW, Australia's firefighters are among the best in the world, which is precisely why we're always going over to bail out the Yanks.

Your first task would be to find something we're incapable of dealing with.

We haven't had the infamous London fogs since the clean air act of 1953!!!! So it's quite comforting that the ozzies feel they haven't got anything more recent than 52 years old to have a pop at London about.

Cheers

Do you remember the sydney bushfires the water helicopters were dontated to us by California, what sort of cock up was it then if melbourne already had them

Perth and qld are now sharing some not sure if they are hired or we actually splashed out and bought some.

Airconditioners and pools, you are so out of date, queensland has even upped electricity for households who run them, effectively by adding a new rate for people whos power is over $70 most people with a pool or AC have quoted elec bills of $500 a quarter. As of march 1 we will even be told what sort of light fittings we can use and cant have electric hot water systems either. Most of aus will follow, perth had warnings last year to not use AC either, if you dont believe it come back and live here

As for cars, your saying one car does not block a highway, crap!! seen it and sat in it many a summer, many highways are one lane! and in summer cars overheating is a frequent problem.

Australias like anywhere else shi!e happens and often they find it hard to cope. Once again your memories of OZ seem out of date with whats happening now, are you sure its 2 years since you left sounds like 2 decades more often

Your links great too, the water bombers were brought in from canada ie hired loaned like the ones borrowed from california, must be that aussie education you 'ad

Ok now australia isnt expected to stop smog in its tracks but UK is expected to stop snow in its tracks, please snow come back at a more convenient time for Vash please

Australias bushfire fighters are mainly volunteers, remember Badge seriously most of the fighters have minimal training and are putting their lives on the line, not paid professionals same as the anti terror measures we will be relying heavily on volunteers like country fire brigades and SES volunteers to save us.
