Default money you can claim/save before you leave u.k

Hi ,
We should be in Brisbane end of April, so we are sorting out like mad. I just thought I would hand out some useful knowledge that I have found out recently.

When cancel you cancel your T.V licience, if you pay by D.D you are actually loads in credit about £100, then you can also claim your Tax back from inland revenue by filling out P-85 leaving the country form. (www.hmrc.gov.uk) Also you are prob 2 months in credit on your council tax, water rates, and you might even have credit on your gas/elec bills.
When your on a budget, every penny counts. especially when its doubled in Oz!

This is such a useful site, Someone has probably said this before, so sorry if you know already. x

Don't forget you can claim your Aussie First Boat Owner's Grant electronically now while you're still in the UK.

Are you sure you are not confusing uk with australia? I can see uk giving out "boat grants" but not so sure anywhere else would be as "friendly"

If you are paying car insurance, contents/buildings insurance with an annual premium (as opposed to monthly), you will also get money back (minus a small admin fee) when you phone them to cancel the policies. If your "year" has only just started when you're leaving for Oz that could be a nice little sum.

A lot of councils close their council tax accounts office for the month before the new financial year so the payments for that month are spread over the other 11 months. If you leave mid way through the year, you have paid more than you ought to. It is worth phoning them to do an exact calculation of your council tax on the day you leave. It is usually worth a bit in a rebate.

If you accidentally forget to pay your credit card before you go you could save millions however you will not have many friends on this site. (Not many that will admit it anyway)

You don't have to do anything except cancel it - on the day that you stop using your TV. They will automatically rebate you whatever you are due - we got about £45! They were fabulous - not like other people who demanded x number of working days before they could cancel our payments, etc.
If you can, ring around about 6 weeks before you plan to move and find out who needs what notice period so you don't pay for anything you aren't getting.
We got £200 back off the council too! Boy did that feel good!
If you live in a permit-parking area then you can claim back any left-over portion of your permit too, even if it's just a tenner. It all adds up!

I would definitely do the TV licence before you leave...we are still trying to claim ours back now, over a year later!
