If you call in to one of the UK mobile shops and pay them about £10 they will do something to your mobile phone. Then when you get to Oz you can get a Sim card from a Mobile dealer that will work over there.
You can not by a Sim card for Oz in the UK.

Optus is a good one to go for, fairly cheap, and there don't seem to be any compatability problems when sending SMS to the UK>

There is no need to do anything with your mobile whilst still in the UK. Just bring it over to Oz and get a new Sim card. It`ll work fine - our Nokias did.

BTW, Optus is not reknowned for its great coverage here (in Brisbane at least).

I did try using telstra at first, but SMS messages go down a black hole en route to the UK. Optus is more successful, for us anyway, but I guess it depends what sort of usage you are after, and which part of the city you are in.
