Re: mobile phone question
We asked vodafone UK this same question just 2 days ago.
You have to have a UK phone unlocked to accept an International sim card.
Vodafone will do this for free. You have to get the unlocking code from customer services after providing proof of who you are, that you own that phone, etc, over the phone.
Some codes are accessible via vodafone UK retail outlets, but the one for the wife's phone was not, so I'll be calling customer services.
If you want to use your phone with it's current UK sim card, it'll cost you a lot more as it is classed as an international call/text and is routed via the UK network, so you pay more for outgoing calls/texts and you also pay for incoming calls and texts.
Hope this helps

Re: mobile phone question
If you are going to spend time in Aus and the UK the 3 network is good - you can receive calls for free in any country that has a 3 network and sending SMS while overseas is included in your monthly cap as long as you are roaming on the local 3 network. If you make calls while roaming on 3 the rates are good too. Saved me a few $ when I was recently over in the UK.
