Hi Sam...
Before I came to Oz, I did a lot of research into prepaid phone prices (I had a lot of spare time on my hands!). From what I gathered, the cheapest/best value options were Vodafone & Virgin. I chose Vodafone, as it has a larger coverage area than Virgin, and haven't had any problems. I like the fact that they have different prepay options tailored to how you use your phone, i.e. lots of nighttime calls, lots of texts, etc. Their $49 capped deal is pretty good if you're gonna use the phone a lot - $49 gets you something like $250 worth of calls!

I use virgin mobile pre-pay. has 20c text messages which is cheaper than most others I belive. Depending on how much credit you buy determins the call rate. Coverage is from the Optus network and I have had no problems in most urban areas throughout Australia. I used to use the telstra prepay but although the coverage is good I think they are the most pricey for call rates and texts.

I use virginmobile and have had no issues with coverage. I sometimes have a telstra phone for work and I find their coverage worse where I live and recently they had a huge service failure for a few hours. Typical Telstra.
