Apart from that, seems OK. Middle class area, a few apartment blocks, on the rail line and not far from the beach at Cronulla. It's not spectacularly desirable but it's not bad either. The whole Sutherland area is very family oriented. A good, middling type of suburb - there are far worse places to live in, in Sydney.

10 or 15 mins from Cronulla beach - don't worry about the riots.
Massive shopping/ cinema at Westfield.
On a train link direct to Sydney central - from memory about 50 min trip. You can also get the train to the beach.
Quite a nice, pleasant area, with lots of leafy streets, but also dull in the suburban sort of way. Depends what you like really.

Re: Miranda, Syndey
We stayed near Miranda (Oyster Bay) when we first arrived and after a couple of months in Balmain have decided we actually want to live in The Shire (crossing over Tom Ugly's bridge just makes me feel like coming home).
I have mainly only been to the Shopping Centre in Miranda and as others have said it's huge. There seem to be a lot of houses nearby along with some flats, a large hospital and a direct train to Sydney. Personally we have decided to live about 10 minutes from Miranda in the Oyster Bay/Como/Jannali area as it takes about 15 minutes less on the train to Sydney but it not much further to the beach (Cronulla, great beach, we landed the day after the riots but we've never found any trouble there).
Everywhere we go in the Shire people seem very friendly and helpful. Life is a bit slower there than Central Sydney and it seems to be mainly hard working middle class people enjoying raising a family and having the space to do it. We're looking at spending around $600k on a 4 bed house with bush views but there is plenty of stuff cheaper plus multi-million dollar mansions.
