do any members in wa or who are about to emmigrate from the uk to perth' have any advice on the minning industry.... is it similar to western canada as the unskilled jobs like plant operators are only open to citizens of he country i would love to be able to get out of the uk with a view to gaining some kind of sponsorship into the minning industry

I don't believe that the unskilled jobs are only open to citizens as I know a New Zealander that works in the mining industry driving diggers. My son-in law who has a pr visa is also looking at working in the mines.

You do need to hold the relevant australian certificates/licenses and have a right to work in Oz but I think that's about it.
By all accounts the wages are very good in most areas of mining.

No, jobs are open to all legal residents of Australia. However, gaining sponsorship for an unskilled job would be virtually impossible.

Best bet would be to retrain in a skilled job that is on the immigration list and apply for PR or a work visa.

It's easier than Canada which Albertas O£G projects are basically closed to foerigners but still no chance without qualifications, or a million tickets.

Just ask the Tazxi drivers in Perth how hard it is to get onto the mines hehehe

What type of job are you looking for and what sort of training (if any) do you have?

As the others have said all you need is a valid working visa to allow you to work there. So either a temporary employer sponsored visa or a permanent visa would do.

To be frank your odds of getting sponsored by an employer for an unskilled job are next to none (in my opinion). There are plenty of Australians trying to get work there so there's really no need for them to sponsor a foreign worker.

I speak from experience on this as my husband is a mining engineer (from western Canada). When we first applied for our permanent visa my husband applied to lots of mines & contractors and spoke to quite a few agents. No one really even wanted to speak to him until he had a visa in hand AND was in Australia. This was at a time when there was a shortage of qualified mining engineers.

So even for a qualified, experienced mining engineer sponsorship didn't happen after months of trying. This is why I say the odds aren't good for you. Sorry. However, there's no harm in trying but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I should add that once we had our own permanent visas AND were in Australia he had two job offers in his first week. So it wasn't that they didn't want him, it's just they didn't want him until we were in Australia with a visa in hand.

As a geologist at a large mine here i would say that Comet has summed it up pretty well.

Sponsorship is available in the industry but normally only to things like engineers and geologists.

Or highly skilled tradies - controls electricians, specialised welders, hydraulic technicians etc

the people who get on minesites as general labour always seem to know someone such as a family member or mate.

agree with this 100% - it's all about WHO you know when it comes to general labourers!

im a heavy equipment operator but i would even take a job as a cleaner to prove my work ability i have no provblem starting at the bottom and working my way up

This is the issue the low skilled cleaning jobs are the most in demand.

You need to be highly skilled within the mining field with experience and usually a degree related role. Other than that there is no demand for foreigners like Alberta.
