Ive said for a long time, often where oz govt claims there is a skills shortage it equates to a lot of jobs in places in OZ aussies dont want to go ;)

I am sure with a nice website and glossy posters of australian countryside and climate  migrants could be pursuaded to head 13 hours north or west of most major cities

Can you imagine the spin they could come up with:rofl:

The Govt should massively invest into Tasmania for massive population growth. It is an established state, reasonably sized and has a very nice climate.

Yet it only has 500,000 people and was colonised long before most of Australia. Hobart and Launceston could definately handle a couple of hundred thousand more people.

Nothing particularly new in this.

I think that would go down like a stone in Tassie, its pristine and clean and world heritage listed and that is the pull of it, less people. :D

The only problem I see with this is that people will live bush for a couple of years (or however long the Govt says) and once they have their citizenship, they'll leave the bush and go live nearer the cities. We'll be back to square 1.

Some people will stay and love it in the bush but I'd guess the majority won't and will use the scheme as an easier/fast track way to get into Australia.

And tying people to regional Australia with a temporary visa doesn't work either, due to the problems people then have with health, education, healthcare etc.

Besides, how many IT/accountant migrants do places like Docker River have the capacity to absorb: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Docker_River

One effect may be to create industry further out from the current normal settling areas.

Another effect may be to use the income created by these new migrants to expand current facilities.

It seems better than doing nothing.

Dig up the middle of Australia, sell it to the Chinese, fill the big hole with sea water and hey presto, you have doubled the area for beach front property, reduced global sea levels and probably ended the drought as well.

Now THAT'S doing something. :)

I have often thought of something like that,

The US and Russia have some excess ordinance that would make that hole quite easily ;)

I like the idea, then we can live on canals as they are very popular with people these days. :D

Yeah but how much sacred land would this affect?

There would be uproar (unless they get financially compensated):rofl::rofl:

but the land would still be there.... it would just be under a few feet of water. They could have free snorkels?

Nah, that wouldn't wash. they're building a bridge over the Onkaparinga River, south of Adelaide, and the local leaders won't have any of it cause it's disturbing sacred lands (they 'sensed' bones on the riverbank).

The plan to 'sink' a chunk of the outback would clearly disturb the ground. You're obviously in dreamtime. ;)

I love the way that you've identified the major problem with detonating a nuclear bomb to create an inland sea to attract increased migration as ... native title!
