Hi all
Does any one know the minimum driving licence age for Oz. Is it different across the states?
My son will be sixteen before we go (if we go!!!) and wants to know when he can start nicking the car! is it the same as the UK?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Col
The rules do vary from state to state, although I think the minimum age is probably the same. Unless its changed recently, in NSW you can take your theory exam at 16 years, pass that and you get a learners permit, which allows you to start learning, either with an instructor or another fully licenced adult. At 17 years you can take your driving test, pass that and you get a provisional licence. Not sure home long this lasts, but you are restricted on speed, must have a blood alcohol reading below 0.2 and you have a reduced number of points to lose. Check www.rta.nsw.gov.au for details for NSW. Not much help if you're not going to NSW, but the otherstates probably have similar rules.
Cheers
Zena

this is the licensing centre for perth. It should give you all the details you
require. I've been living in Perth all my life, and only driving for 4 years now, the
licensing system only changed this year (or late last year i think)
When I went for my license, I had to be 16yrs, 9 months to get my learners permit,
and you had to be 17 before you could go for your driving test.
Now it's something like 16yrs to get your learners permit, but you have to keep a
log of your driving, and there has to be night driving and country driving (i
think), and you still have to be 17 to get your license. So you'd have the learner's
permit for a year.
Then if you do get your license, you're on probationary for three years (i think -
all this was in planning while I was getting my license), and the blood alcohol level
is 0.02 for probationary drivers, and 0.05 for full license drivers.
hope that helps.
