Mental Health Nursing in Aus as a lone parent.
Hi.
I (along with many others online ive seen am seriously considering emmigrating to Aus with my 11 year old daughter, and am at the stage where i'm dipping my toes in to research if this could be a viable option for us!!
I am a qualified mental health nurse currently working on a forensic ward, so my enquiry is not particularly aimed at residency as following the right channels, that will not be a problem. I am more searching for advice and others experiences...if any one of here has done the same.
I have no family, and though ive afew contacts, no real friends out there. I do however have a very supportive family member to help me make initial transition, willing to spend 3 months while I set up work/home/schooling etc for myself and my daughter.
I just wondered of any one had any advice concerning my personal situation as a lone parent....such as cost of living, advice on location, schooling, support that may be available to nurses moving to Aus alone with their child? Any one know of any support available in this situation to make transition smoother?
I have lived a year in Brazil with my daughter before, I am not scared of the difficulties involved, nor neive to it, I just wish to educate myself as best I can to make as wise a decision as possible!!
MANY THANKS to anyone replying. I really do appreciate your time to give any feedback.

Hi Meme & welcome to BE!
I am not aware of any specific help for lone parents or nurses to aid settlement however QLD do offer some assistance with relocation costs & this is probably the same in other states.
You could ask some questions on the nurses forum too. http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=72
There are several threads regarding the permission you will need to remove your child if her father is still living & the hoops people have had to jump through to acheive it.
Good luck & happy research!

Hi Meme- good luck with your application. The link to my thread has already been put up for you to have a read. Feel free to email me. It is without a doubt the hardest thing emotionally i have ever done. Working full time and bringing up children alone is doubly hard and very lonely at times BUT we all settled really well and i wouldnt change a thing!

Hi all,
Thank you so much for your advice....I read the other lone parent thread, and will look into other thread aimed more towards nurses...very kind of you to point me in right direction.
'Daunted'....WOW......you have my absolute respect and admiration. I can try to imagine how hard things have been (and as I know only too well as a lone parent, continue to be in this country alone let alone emmigrating and starting from scratch...with 3 children, amazing, seriously amazing!!!).
I am thinking of this as a longer term goal. Want to gain more nursing MHN experience here first, so my daughter (and unfortuantely myself too, lol) will be a little older when we make this move. Her father returned to his home land in South America 7 years ago, and contributes nothing to her life (emotionally or financially) so I can see no difficulty in that. Infact if I did suggest us relocating to Aus he would jump at the chance and see it as a future free holiday!!!
There is so much to consider I know, but I see we have little to lose if we make this move. We will leave this country with nothing, and there for can return with the same....I think as a lone parent 'daunted' you may understand what I mean by that.
I will consider to explore, research, and work my little (or arguably not so little) ass off in the mean time to reach towards a better life for my daugher and I, where atleast the sun does shine.
Best wishes to all of you, thank you...and daunted, if there is one thing thats for sure your children, as they grow older, will see all the sacrifces you have made to give them this better life, and im sure will be eternally grateful for that XXX
