Smile Melbourne's the best city - better latte than never

AUSTRALIA'S oldest rivalry has finally been settled.

In case anyone was still wondering (and Melbourne folk haven't deigned to lift their noses out of their cafe lattes or to venture out of their edgy laneway bars for ages to even consider it), Sydney has lost the plot.

The evidence? Sydney's own populace has spoken.

The northern city awoke yesterday to a front-page report and poll in The Sydney Morning Herald that found that one in five Sydneysiders was so sick of traffic snarls and the high cost of living that they were considering moving to another city.

Sydney's sparkling harbour clearly doesn't cut it any more: 62,000 people moved to Melbourne last year, which is almost twice the number who found themselves attracted to Sydney's suspect delights. The result was that Sydneysiders copped the worst of both worlds: the median price of a house in Sydney was $553,000 — the highest in the country but stuck in sluggish territory, with real estate prices growing by just 4.8% last year.

By contrast, groovy Melbourne's real estate fairly rocketed last year, growing 25% to produce a median house price of a (slightly) more affordable $485,000.

With Sydney's job market growing well below Australia's average, a government shaken by an inquiry linking increasing numbers of Labor figures to corruption, and a public transport system so despised that commuters prefer sitting in gridlocked traffic, the Herald/Nielsen poll — which found 21% of Sydneysiders were thinking of upping stumps — shouldn't come as a surprise.

The Fairfax paper rubbed it in anyway, quoting well-known KPMG social analyst and demographer Bernard Salt.

"Excuse me Sydney, but would you mind stepping aside while Melbourne takes centre stage!" Salt wrote in his latest report.

And while Sydney was still able to throw a giant gay and lesbian mardi gras at the weekend, with more than 100,000 spectators, it's losing the cultural race. Jobs in the creative and cultural worlds grew at 1% across Australia between 2001 and 2006, but fell by 2% in NSW.

Spangled handbags, in short, just don't equate with, ahem, class. But then, Melburnians always knew that.

We do ...Melbourne has class and guts and a warmth to it, that does not come from shimmery glitz.
