Melbourne in winter
We're planning to visit Oz in August. We're there for 3 weeks. The obvious choice for us is Melbourne,as we want to settle there, but we're concerned that the children will need some entertaining.Obviously the beach will be out of action(too cold),so are there any trips, theme parks etc anyone could recommend, just to break the holiday up a bit. We're limited when we can go as I'm a teacher. We had thought of going there in the Easter holidays next year, but it seems such a long way away.

There are stacks of things to see and do, in Melbourne and close to Melbourne. These are just a few off, in no intended order:
Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Aquarium, Rialto Observation Deck, Queen Victoria Market, (free) City Circle tram ride, Luna Park at St Kilda, Sovereign Hill and Wildlife Park at Ballarat, Puffing Billy train ride in the Dandenongs, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula, Southgate and Southbank, Crown Casino, Botanical Gardens, MCG and Melbourne Park, Treasury Museum, Parliament Buildings and 'Paris end' of Collins St, Immigration Museum, Melbourne Museum, Imax cinema, Carlton Gardens and Exhibition Buildings, boat trip to Williamstown and Scienceworks, Spa country - Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, Albert Park Lake where the F1 Grand Prix is held etc, etc.
And on the second day!

Great info - thanks .I assume they'll all be open in august
Should we pack our winter woolies or will the weather be like what we're having here at the moment.

It will get dark still early in August - say 5.30pm - you will have to wait until October until it gets reasonably light in the evenings.

Don't forget the Penguins at Phillip Island, but take a warm coat.

We did a day of looking round at things we needed to look at and then a day entertaining the kids, so it broke it up and they werent too bored. We visited in September/October, so a few days it was warm enough to go on the beach which helped.
Philip Island is supposed to be great, sadly we didnt make it there, but would have loved to have gone.
Hope this helps.

For more specific climate data (maybe I'm doing wintry Melbourne an injustice) - visit http://www.bom.gov.au
Basically - August is not the time of year to catch Melbourne at its best. Are you sure you don't want to spend just 1 week in Melbourne and the rest of the time in northern Australia?

Re: Melbourne in winter
It's the free city circle tram ride that Joanne was thinking of. It goes right round the outside of the CBD and passes the State Library, the Mint, the Immigration Museum, the Aquarium and Flinders St Station.
Speaking of weather it was 5C yesterday morning going to work, but it didn't feel that cold because there was no wind. It's def the wind that makes it cool here. BTW we've had a fantastic April and May (so far) for weather here.
Incidentally if you are coming in August and want something to do for the kids, the Lion King musical is playing here then. We have tickets to take my seven year old lad for September.
Hope all goes well.

Can anyone suggest a good website where we can find all the above attractions in relation to hotels/apartments.We've looked at using public transport for the first week, then hiring a car for the rest of the time,so we need to be quite central
Thanks to everyone

http://www.visitvictoria.com.au
http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au
and http://melbourne.citysearch.com.au
for starters. A google search on most of these attractions will turn up a website for each.
Many of the things we have listed are in the city centre or on the fringes and from a central hotel you would be able to get to all of them via tram or 'shanks pony'. The city circle tram is brilliant for getting about in the city - jump on and off wherever you want on the route for free. Ballarat, Geelong, Phillip Island, Yarra Valley, Dandenongs etc could wait for when you have a hire car but there are organised daily bus trips to all of these as well (could be on the expensive side for a family to do a number of trips this way though).

Re: Melbourne in winter
Hello,
There should be plenty of snow in the mountains in August. Mt Donna Buang is close to Melbourne and is set up for Tobogganing. The ski slopes are a little further away but still within easy reach of Melbourne.
The sunset times in August are approximately 17:30 at the beginning and 18:00 at the end with nearly 30 mins of twilight.
Regards
Alistair

Re: Melbourne in winter
Echuca, is only 2.75 hours from central Melbourne, there you have the Murray river, along with Paddle steamers etc, and the NSW border, Probably worth a visit, get to see some countryside/bush, which will actually be green at that time of year. If your lucky Echuca could hit 20 degrees ! Only if your lucky though.
I'd also take a drive down the great ocean road, it will be spectacular and wild at that time of year, also asking others on here When do the whales at Warrnambool come out, about August I think ??
