Default Melbourne West - Dry as

Just drove back along the Western highway to Melbourne.

It is as dry as hell and brown. The east seems to be greening up nicely, with recent rain this last 6 weeks, but the dryer west is suffering - it must have looked on its last legs 2 months ago.

Also went past Caroline Springs - bang in all that dryness and very new.

Why do you reckon the East is wetter mate? Do the Dandenongs make a difference in the same way the Andes do in South America and the Southern Alps in New Zealand? They don't look high enough!

Probably. I don't know exact reasons for Melbourne - and would invite corrections or comments.

Bear in mind Mt Dandenong is fairly high compared to English standards!

On the radar you can often see a rain band over the Dandys.

Having said that the Otways, SW, N of the Gt Ocean Rd (yadda yadda godzone etc) is supposed to experience high rainfall in VIC.

Being in the shadow of Mount Dandenong, we don't seem to have had much rain - but what we have had has worked wonders in 'greening' the area up. For The Basin specifically, the rainfall on the hard soil does seem to run in torrents down any slopes, so that probably helps!

Its been on the news tonight thats its officially been the driest year since records began 155 years ago. We've apparently only have 316mm which is way below average. They said it could take years to recover
