Melbourne at weekend??
Hiya
We are going to Melbourne this weekend, staying in the City. Can anyone give us a few tips on where to go ( especially night time  ). Im in need for my shoppin fix & it'll be nice to go out somewhere that has a buzz about the place, in comparison to sleepy ol Adelaide ;) Thanks Karen |
Re: Melbourne at weekend??
Shopping wise Chapel Street would be the number one suggestion, just cos everyone goes on about it. Southbank is really nice for a wander and there's a little market on a sunday. St Kilda also has a market on Sunday's. Citywise there's Swanston Street which leads up to Bourke Street and the Bourke Street mall but mainly in the city, it's a case of wandering around and seeing what you can discover.
As to night life, someone else will have to answer that as I only go to one club and that plays 80s rock. Otherwise, I have no social life (get out the violins......) Lots of little bars and bistro's around and could try some of the ones at Federation Square or Southbank and there's always the casino (more to do other than playing the little machines) Sass

It is pretty good. Only runs twice a month though. It's called 'back in the day' and they've got a website if you want to check it out! :D

Re: Melbourne at weekend??
Useful suggestions would depend upon your tastes. Chapel St is over-rated from my viewpoint but I'm not into paying over the odds for designer labels and wishing to be seen with the in-crowd, sipping coffee at twice the price of elsewhere! You might spot Kylie and Dannii though! :D
There are lots of other shopping strips in the inner suburbs. Richmond is very popular (Swan St and Bridge St) for example and closer than South Yarra/Prahran. There's lots of shops in the city with all things for all tastes - department stores such as Myer's and David Jones are worth checking out and there are some good city centre malls such as Australia on Collins, Melbourne Central etc. Not to be missed is the Queen Victoria Market at the top of town but it's not where the Chapel St crowd would hang out - huge selection of clothing, food and so on. Prahran market is good and just off Chapel St. Nightclub recommendations I'll leave to others. OzTennis :) |

Wow
Ta much for the info :) Im sooo looking forward to it.. Adelaides nice n all that, but lacks a certain "buzz", and i bet Melbourne has that! Thanks again Karen |
Re: Melbourne at weekend??
I can definatly recommend Lygon St Carlton or Brunswick St Fitzroy. Great shopping AND great restaurants and cafe culture withouth the seedy side that St Kilda has. St Kilda's Esplenade Market is a definate must do tho, its awesome!!
Go and see Pollywoodside which is a replica(i think its a replica) tall ship. Or go for a wander up St Kilda road to the War Memorial. Havent been yet, but the Immigration Museum is meant to be awesome, so is the Old Melbourn Gaol which is in the City. You could go to the Queen Victoria Market and do a tour which will have you sampling loads of food etc. Go up to the Observation deck at the Rialto tower. The best view of Melbourne!! Well worth the time IMO. Hope these help. Hels |
Re: Melbourne at weekend??
For the Evening, The Casino and Southbank, The Casino also has 3 Nightclubs on the Upperfloors.
I'd Do Lygon or Bruswick St, or both as they are close to each other, in The Arvo, and the Casino area in the Evening. If you like Pubs, 3 pubs worth Visiting, The top choice being The Dan O connell Hotel, (doesn't fire up properly until after 9pm) My favourite pub in Melbourne. (Princess st Carlton). I've yet to see a better pub in the whole of Aussie. Followed by the always Good, Clifton Hill hotel, and Normbanby hotels, Clifton Hill, Both within Walking distance of each other. |

Re: Melbourne at weekend??
Well thanks guys for all the tips.. and piccies
We both really enjoyed it..Stayed just off Bourke St mall, so pretty central, went out at night to Casino ( the pubs are great, didnt need to bother about gambling), the waterfront bit there is very nice, with those fountains & firey thingies...drank in various pubs/clubs around town ( cant remember names tho  , St Kilda was good, shopping on Bridge Street, and had luvly meals at the greek bit, as well as a good night at Lygon Street...saw a guy from neighbours in a pub there.. that was funny :D Very impressed, lots happening in Melbourne & wont be long til were back again Thanks Karen |
Re: Melbourne at weekend??
I hope Sye didn't follow my Tip of the Dan O Connell, It's changed hands, I was in there Friday nite, for the first time in about 8 months, its changed from the tradtional Irish pub that it used to be (and it was traditional unlike the Plastic Bridie o rileys and P J obriens etc) and is a shadow of it's former self.
Anyone that took note do not bother with the Dan O connell. |
