Melbourne v Sydney & 457 temporary Visa
 

I was planning to apply for the skilled independant permanent residency visa but could not face waiting by the letter box for months, so I have just got back from Oz after having interviews with companies with a view to getting a temp. residency visa. I have been offered sponsorship in both Sydney & Melbourne. Could anyone provide me with some info. on the following:-

I can not decide between the two cities both have advantages/disadvantages. Any comments or experiences would be appreciated.

They would sponsor me on a 457 visa, how can I convert this into a permanent visa then citizenship. I understand that it is sometimes quicker once you are in OZ. I have the necessary criteria to be elegible for permanent residency. Has anyone had experiences with this type of visa?

Two Options that spring to mind. However there are a few other visa's you could apply for assuming you meet the requirements.

1) Employer Nominated Sponsorship - It's quicker than Skilled independant

and

2) Skilled Independant - currently quoted as taking 50 weeks

Skilled Independant you would have to leave Australia to pick up the visa. You would have to go to somewhere like New Zealand or Singapore to collect the visa. You can stay in OZ while it's being process but have to leave to pick it up.

Not sure about Employer Nominated !!!!

Sydney: Better weather (for 9 months of the year), better beaches,
nicer setting (Harbour etc)

Melbourne: Better transport system, more cultural/sporting events,
better theatres/restaurants/shopping, real estate about 35% cheaper.

Basically the 457 is not an alternative to PR, but is useful if you
want to go to Australia while you wait for PR.

It's possible to apply for Employer Nominated PR onshore in Australia
(no need to leave the country to be granted your visa). But while the
processing time is shorter, your employer will usually have to do
things like Labour Market Testing and getting your nomination
approved, all of which have to occur before you apply for your PR
visa.
