You could consider Langwarrin, although it is a 1 hour commute from the CBD. Get a decent house for your 400k and close to the beach and peninsula too.

When you rent an unfurnished place, is that totally unfurnished i.e. no white goods? Just wondering whether to stick the washing machine and dishwasher into the container.

Most places are rented unfurnished - this usually means they will have a cooker and a dishwasher. We didn't bring any electricals with us so rented a fridge, washing machine and tv when we first arrived. Now (after 3 years) we have finally moved out of rental into our own place - fantastic!!! :D

So here is the official Melbourne thread. Who's going there? When? Who's been there? For how long? What's good? What's bad? What's indifferent? The Perthies have their own thread for contacts so I thought we should have a Melbourne one. I'll kick it off. I'm aiming to be there by the end of this year. I've never been there despite having been to other parts of Australia. My reason for going to Melbourne is that it's the only place my OH would consider but now I've started researching it I'm feeling very excited. It never gets a look in on Wanted down under so I even started watching Neighbours to get my fix of it :o Who else is going there/ there already? We didn't want to only hang around with Brits and have many varied friends which makes life much more interesting. The good things about Melbourne is it's known as the CLASSY sister to BRASSY Sydney. We're in a bay so no rough seas, rips or sharks. We have a decent winter (it snows on the mountains) and variable summer. Yesterday was a pleasant 25 celcius and today is a hot 39 - keeps life exciting. Thankfully we don't get too many days that hot. At least there's no humidity. The Grt. Ocean rd. is around the corner. I've met a lot of people who tried Perth, felt very insular so came here and love it. We are known for our cuisine and art. The city has very modern buildings as well as lots of beautiful old preserved ones. We have the Grand Prix (for now) and the tennis Open. We don't have all the creepy crawlies you get on the GC! Only bad points I can see is when it gets hot like today!! Thank goodness we have really good evaporative cooling air conditioning - as well as heating for the winter! Another bad point - the drought! But I've been led to believe it's a usual cycle and not any other modern influence like global warming - YET!! The more we visit the in-laws in Sydney, the more grateful I am to live here in Melbourne. If anyone has any doubts, read Billy Connelly's travels to Australia and see what he says.
