Hi everyone! Do you mind if we join your thread? We are in the early stages and want to move to Melbourne, visas permitting by early next year.

Welcome to B.E :)

The Melbourne lot on here are very friendly and are passionate about their city

If you decide what kind of lifestyle you are after then they will let you know suburbs to look at. Beach? City? country?
Try the nursing forum too for advice on where to look for a job and where to avoid.

Hello all... I'm Sean. I've been reading this thread and others for days - a goldmine of useful info - I'm hoping that members will be able to help with a general query.

My wife Mary (mental health nurse) and myself (electrician - renewables) are expecting to arrive in Melbourne (from UK) in early July on a 457 visa with Mary having offer of sponsorship tbc but looking very positive. We're both on MODL with 135 points each. No kids, age just over 30. Just about to submit the paperwork.

We hope to live in the city, close as possible to Royal Melbourne Hospital (or another central public hospital). We wish to afford a 2 bed rental in a lively place. We plan on a trip of at least 1 year. I'm told that I will need to work for a year as a supervised electrician before I can be self-employed. Can anyone tell me how simple it will for me to find work as a tradesman in or close to the city? Apart from my electrical quals, I'm good at basic plumbing, joinery, tiling, decor, renovation. Are there resonably well paid jobs available for the likes of me without having to become an old apprentice again?

Apart from socialising we don't have expensive hobbies. Do our plans seem realistic? Any specific advice or general guidance would be gratefully received. (Have also looked at Nurses thread on BE, plus Britvics). Thanks in advance!

Hi Sean - welcome to B.E :)

have you looked in the Electricians forum for advice about work for you?
I know there are strict licensing rules for plumbers and I guess it's the same for electricians.
