Melbourne Suburbs
 

Hi

I know I may have to wait a bit for a reply from Oz. As asleep now. but would like to get some feedback on Melbourne suburbs.

We would not necessarily be tied to a commute as OH is a plumber and I am a rep. Would like to be close enough to venture in for night out or shopping though.

Our main priority would be good schools, safe area and family orientated, as we have 2 small children to consider.

Cost is also an issue. We would prob prefer to rent and then buy some land.

Im quite drawn to mornington peninsula? Anyone live there. Good and bad areas within it? Also have a friend in greensborough , but not sure where that is in relation to everything.

MP is over an hour from CBD to the SE, generally all nice areas, relatively cheap housing (largely because of distance from CBD), plenty of beaches, countryside nearby, good schools, shopping etc, not much on the minus side (apart from distance from CBD). Mount Eliza is one of the better parts, consider South Frankston, Mornington also.

G'b is to the north east of CBD, away from beaches, not far from the hills, lots of newer housing, older parts as well, OK for schools, shopping etc.

There are of course over 300 suburbs so not easy to recommend without you giving further information on budget, water or hills, commute times, public transport etc, etc. In the meantime, have a look at the Melbourne property guides which will give you an idea of prices by suburb:

We would prefer water. I think an hour would be fine. Not too sure on our budget yet. We were in Sydney originally and as much as we loved it just too expensive! Think we would rent first but, dont want to settle into an area and then not be able to afford to buy there.

Im not going to just assume your in Melbourne now? but how come you are so familiar with it?

the drive from greensborough to st kilda beach is only 35 minutes

we are in eltham, about 5 minutes from greensborough

Ah yes...we have friends in eltham as well....how are you finding it there?

I'm Simons wife!!
we love Eltham , it ticks all our boxes but if you like Mornington its very, very different!
It has more of a country feel.
Greensborough is quite nice but a bit more built up, good shopping centre though!
We've been here for just over 5 months and will be looking to buy soon but still after all this time not sure where yet,,, Eltham is lovely but so are so many other places here , decisions, decisions!!

Good luck with your search,, the only bit of advice I can give you is that once you are actually here places are very different to how they come across on the net,, theres no substitute for getting in your car and having a proper look around!

Hi...can I ask what made you decide on melbourne?

How do you find the rental costs/house prices in eltham?

Sorry for my inquisitiveness. I have only ever been to melb for a weekend and had no intention of living there at the time...we are definately considering a reccie but will need to save a bit first!

Is the rental market as bad as it is in Sydney at the mo?
