Default Melbourne Southbank at night

Well...well at 1am on Sunday morning I drove off up the SE highway (M1) and in to the city to go to the Dickens Pub (off Collins) where the England vs Wales footy was being shown on Star Sports (EnZud mob?)

To avoid the Citylink toll, I turned off the M1 at Warrugal Road and continued along the Princes Highway and thence up the Saint Kilda Road to Southbank.

The drive up Saint Kilda Road was excellent, the avenues are lined with IT companies like Oracle, Dimension Data, who says there are no decent companies in Australia, and I then turned off on to Southbank Boulevard to park in the Crown Casino. Loads of spaces - only $8 a night - not bad, surely for a perfect access to the city? How much would it be to park in a central London location?

As you walk out of the casino, you emerge on to the southbank of the Yarra which was stunning. There is a choice selection of well lit bridges to take you over to the North side and the CBD delights of Flinders and Collins Street.

What a view!!! Who says Australia is backward? They know how to build CBDs. Much nicer than the hotchpotch smatterings of Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street and Picadilly Circus. And nicer than London's southbank. It's great to survey the Yarra River and know you are in a city of 4m people, and not to have to consult one map on the way in. And get a perfect parking spot where you can even have a beer - and a gamble if you are that way inclined!

PS I made a mental note to take MrsB out for evenings at the casino, SMSed her, and she is looking forward to it.

On the way back, I also revelled in the ease with which I was able to leave the CBD. I'm not talking about congestion, just ease of nvaigation, distance etc.

Not far back SE from the Princes Highway there is Chadstone a massive shopping centre for all the shopaholics!!

Which is just one of the reasons that in less than 4 months (house sale permitting), I will be in Melbourne.

Wasn't the rugby being shown on the Massive screen inside the Casino ??
I agree its fantastic around Southbank at night, it used to be even better when the Casino's Gas flares went off every hour before the water restrictions hit us & they couldn't use them due to the anount of water needed to cool the towers. Just a pity your night was spoiled by England winning the rugby.

not sure..I know in years gone by the casino is a great place to catch any sporting event on TV, but I was meeting up with poms in the other place.

Also, as Foxtel is not showing the 6N this year, wasn't sure if they were showing it at all in the casino..if they could get Star Sports, then I guess they could show it if asked.

As Engand are RWC holders not bothered what the new team does, but Wales scored two cracking early second half tries only to succumb to pressure at the close. The referee seemed he was panicking at times, at one point I thought he was going to eventually decide the outcome of the game.

erm.. Hup is referring to the corked knee I sustained on Tuesday in training which was bloody painful and caused me to walk around like Douglas Bader all week :lecture:

or, it may be the fact I took my life (and my arse) into my own hands by going out on the night on the town with my trusty recruitment agent who I hadn't otherwise met....

All I can say is, it was the subject of much mockery at last night's barby.

Southbank is brilliant isn't it?! And St Kilda Road is beautiful especially with the gardens surrounding it. Melbourne is probably the greenest city of its size in the world.

Thanks for that BM. Living on the Southbank in a Penthouse apartment I see it everyday and take it for granted and forget to appreciate it more.
