Melbourne Schools
Hi everyone this is my second ever post so here it goes!
I will be relocating with my family to OZ on a 457 Visa sponsored through my new employer. We have a boy and a girl aged 8 and 12 and I am not sure if we will need to pay in Oz for schooling. If so can anyone give me advice on costs?

If your children attend state schools it is probably fair to say that there are more things provided by parents than by the government compared to the UK, so even a state school education won't be 'free'. For example, in a secondary school you might expect a 'Book List' to come home with the items the parent is expected to provide (texts, materials etc). I'll leave it to parents 'on the ground' in Melbourne to give you some figures.

We are moving on the 9th of july thats when our flight is booked. We are going to do a cheeky stop over in Dubai for 4 nights to break up the trip for the kids. When I arrive in Oz we will have a serviced appartment layed on by my employer for 2 weeks. In that time we need to arrange bank accounts, find somewhere to rent/live. So far we have looked at Suburbs in the SE of Melbourne such as Brighton, Elwood, Sandringham etc.
I dont think we will really know what to do until we get on the ground in Melbourne its gonna be pretty hectic especially keeping the kids happy as its a huge move for them.

All nice areas but you will need to be on a bloody goood wage to afford them, especially Brighton which is probably second only to Toorak for expensive houses.

We have been in Melbourne since January. We are the same as you on a 457 visa and had a serviced apartment initially! Hubby started work after the first week so it was up to me and a melways (and 2 small kids) to check out rental accomodation. It was much harder than I thought. Everything was either too small, really grotty etc. we also looked down the bayside area but didn't find anything suitable and time was running out as I needed to enrol daughter into school.
We then started looking north of the city and have ended up in Ivanhoe (for now). Really nice area, 22 mins to cbd on train which is on a par with brighton without the prices. However it is still expensive to buy here so we may move further north again when it comes time to buy.
Back to your original question on schools. On a 457 visa you don't have to pay for state schooling in vic. We had to pay for the 'book list', basically a bag full of all the stationary, pens, pencils, etc they will use throughout the year. This cost approx $200. Also all the school uniform, but they are fairly flexible and you can get stuff from cheaper shops if its in the school colours.
Best of luck with your move,
Ruth

I love this thread - we're coming on 457, husband's already over there and I'll be flying over with kids age 8 and 4. We fly on 14th July with Emirates - any chance we'll be sharing the second leg of your journey?
I'd been worrying about school fees too and hubby is keen on Ivanhoe and Templestowe as well as Black Rock and Sandringham so it's great hearing similar ideas.
Anyone fancy a coffee somewhere in mid/late July?
Carolyn
