Melbourne Pubs
I'm in Melbourne next week for a couple of days and want to get my fix of proper pubs, as they are fairly few and far between up here on the Gold Coast!
Staying on Collins Street, any recommendations?

The Espy and Prince of Wales in St Kilda are worth visiting.

What a shame, I'll miss that then! I'm there midweek and won't be venturing out of the city centre as I intend to head to the nearest pub as soon as my meetings are over.

Re: Melbourne Pubs
all pubs on collins are much of a muchness ,expensive but on a midweek most will be pretty quiet.dickens has plenty of british brew in the fridge which makes a change from the crappy CUB junk we get force fed here....spent many a nite at the espy & never had a hint of a problem

Re: Melbourne Pubs
Cheers, not bothered about jumping, just a proper pub, like yer local back in Blighty with wood and character and a tiny bit of history. Something we lack on the gold coast!

Young & Jacksons across from Flinders Station isn't bad, great view, some nice beers. You can wander over to Federation Square if it takes your fancy.
My local was The Drunken Poet on Peel St (straight across from the Victoria Markets) they have live music most nights. Good place to chat to locals and expats. Has a decent selection of ales.Plus there was a kebab shop a few doors up. Walk straight up Queen St to the Markets, then nip across the Market to Peel St. If you reach Victoria St turn back, its behind you. There is a tram stop near it. Tell Siobhan that Keith send you
The Turf bar on Queen St is good for pub grub and has a few pool tables plus lots of sport.
The Mitre is a cool spot, good beer, but can be dead midweek.
The Irish Times on little Collins St is ok as are Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens.
Stay away from Carlton Draught & VB (hangover juice the lot of them)!!!

Elephant and Wheelbarrow on Bourke for a Pommie theme pub (but don't hold that against it). Also walk from there to the Portland Hotel (cnr Little Collins and Russell) for a few pints of James Squires.
For history go to Young and Jacksons and admire Chloe who was a favourite of WW1 soldiers being shipped off to war.
Remember to ask for pints as most pubs in Melly have them.

Yep second the Portland Hotel, James Squier Golden Ale & The Craic
There is the International Bar on the corner of Exhibition St and Lt Collins St plus Bridie O'Reillys just along Lt Collins St.
A nice local beer to try is Mountain Goat made in Richmond.
Try out the chicken Parma's as well for soakage purposes...

The Labour in Vain in Fitzroy-proper pub atmosphere if you are not a lounge bar type of person.

Re: Melbourne Pubs
Rooftop bar in Cookie, Swanston St (if dry)
Madame Brussells, Bourke St (ditto but has an indoor area too)
Robot, Flinders Lane
The Croft Institute, Croft alley near China Town.
Container Bar near China Town
Crown complex - just for the chance to people watch
Also try Brunswick St in Fitzroy (about 10 mins on 112 tram from anywhere on Collins) which has lots of quirky shops, cafes and bars.
We're a bit spolit here for good places to go, hope you enjoy yourself!
