Melbourne houses with pools
Hi, hopefully someone who lives in melbourne will be able to help me out here... We will be coming out (family of four) to Melbourne on 457 visa in Jan hopefully.... I am looking at rental properties on real estate.com and none of the houses seem to have pools... Is it hard to find rental properties in and around Melbourne with a pool?
Thanks in advance

You'll probably use a pool for about 3 months a year in Melbourne, not worth the upkeep. That's why you don't see many. Hot tub/ spa is what you need!

Re: Melbourne houses with pools
We are on Stage 3a Water restrictions in Melbourne which applies to pools as follows:
A new pool or spa of any size capacity cannot be filled. However a swimming pool or spa may be filled with alternative sources of water.
An existing pool or spa of less than 2,000 litres may be filled with a bucket filled directly from a tap (and not by means of a hose).
An existing pool or spa of greater than 2,000 litres must not be filled except in accordance with a water conservation plan (contact your local water business for more information)
An existing pool or spa must not be topped up except by means of a watering can or bucket, filled directly from a tap (not by means of a hose).

We used ours yesterday - it was 23 degrees and we alternated between spa and pool. Lovely. Not so sure I would want to use it today though!

Disagree if you have solar heating which is a must. Our kids were in the pool last weekend and the temperature was 24 degrees in the water. With solar heating you can get use of a pool in Melbourne for six months.

Not actually sure where else you are supposed to get water from other than a tap?

Or maybe they mean fill it with VB, because that stuff is such total pants, it's about the same consistency as water with a bit of colouring in it to provide the awful taste. Rather expensive though...

They get it from the bores which are salty and no good for agriculture.
Beware the neighbourhood spies too if you water at the wrong time.

What about water tanks ?
What about using a solar blanket to stop evaporation ?
We are lucky with a 1/2 acre plot, and I have just taken delivery of a 24000ltr water tank for rain catchment, but a 5000ltr tank is more than enough to keep a pool topped up all year in combination with a blanket. You will probably even have enough to water the garden as well. You can use "grey water" for all sorts, and lots of the locals even use it for drinking water.
A pool in Melbourne is not as common as most of the other states, but you can get at least 6 months use out of a pool with solar heating & solar blankets.
We live up in the dandenongs, which is always cooler than Melbourne itself, and many friends of ours have pools and get plenty of use out of them. Ours will hopefully be in by xmas.
Rentals with pools in Melbourne on the otherhand are pretty much nonexistent. Its too big an investment for no extra return on value in the rental market.

Tried quite a few others, and admittedly there are better, but once you get used to it, you get to love it. Its still the best (IMO) half decent cheap beer available.
Had a heavy session this weekend on Boags at the Moto GP, and NEVER again. Now that is terrible !!!
