Hmmm....£200K equates to about $340K if you exchanged today.....tricky.

I found this, but it's a good hour by train from Flinders Street & only 3 bedrooms. You might need to think about renting for a while to see if either the exchange rate or house prices turn in your favour, or perhaps thinking about topping up with a mortgage.

Had you any idea about other areas at all?

:)

Probably not easily at today's exchange rate.

You may well however be able to buy a block of land and build a house somewhere like Doreen, Cranbourne or Pakenham. Bit further out though.

Melbourne has a very big footprint. Do you have any max distance requirement from the CBD, or is proximity/commute time to the city a non issue ?

You could try out West, perhaps Point Cook?

Its not the best area but its also not the worst, its all fresh and new located about 20 mins from the CBD.

Blocks of land with no house on them now cost $300k+ in Point Cook - I'd say it might be outside their budget.

Off-peak of course...how long would it take at 8am on a weekday?

£200K will make an excellent deposit.
