Melbourne - HELP!
Hello,
Looking for some direct advice... google is boggling my mind
We are moving to Melbourne next year and searching for best areas to live. We both like open space, have two young children so looking for good schools and parks and ideally within walking/close proximity to the beach.
Any advice would be grand!
Thanks

Hi. Welcome to BE. My suggestions would be to look at www.domain.com.au and Real Estate, Property & Homes For Sale - realestate.com.au for areas like Sandringham, Edithvale, Hampton (not Hampton Park) and Beaumaris. It will however depend on where work will be based, how far away from that you want to be, and what your budget for renting/buying is.

You cannot find a home from the UK. At this point all you can do is identify some areas that you will take a look at when you get here. You don't need to pick exact suburbs, just a group of suburbs will do.

In our area (Parkdale) we can walk to the beach, the city is 40 mins + to commute and a 3 bed house costs $500 - $600 per week to rent as a guide.
It's a fantastic family area with loads of good schools, kinders etc, but there are a lot of areas that are great family areas, just depends on your budget really.

Our area (dreaded West which everyone thinks is the pits) is 20 mins by train to the city, 10 mins-2hr drive (depending on no of accidents on bridge) beach close by, great primary schools, awful/dearth of secondary schools.
There are lots of spots like this...just need to narrow down specifics further.

Consider Geelong too.
Cheaper housing than Melbourne (as a rule), and an hour commute to Southern Cross from Geelong/South Geelong.
Free parking at South Geelong too.
20 minutes from great beaches at Torquay, 25 mins to Anglesea, etc.
Good luck!

Having grown up in Geelong my advice would be DONT consider Geelong. I lived there for around 15 years altogether and wouldn't in a million years return. Lots of nice areas in Melbourne.

Re: Melbourne - HELP!
That's pretty insulting to those of us who live here very happily.
Not sure what demographic you inhabit, but we are clearly not on the same page ...
Best regards.

It's not insulting at all, it is based on my personal experience. We lived comfortably in Belmont but wouldn't live in Geelong again.

To the OP, I reiterate Geelong as a place to consider.
There is a lot more to the region than Belmont and Geelong's CBD. Particularly for families.
Best regards.

Yes of course there is more than Belmont and the CBD but your opinion is no more valid than anyone elses. You love it and we dont, that's OK as it would be pretty boring if we all wanted the same. I have 5 brothers, 1 of us still lives there

Re: Melbourne - HELP!
it is all demographics...Mr Collett.
I know this for a fact..I visited Geelong a few years ago and met with an architect..he is doing well...
Geelong, like any other town, is not just the pits..
it seems that Chris is the archetypal battler...
