Wink is melbourne a good place to bring up kids

we have spent a lot of time hell bent on going to perth, but as a bricklayer im not happy about the job prospects, and the cost of living, all looks to expensive. so only just started to look at melbourne. there seems to be a lot more jobs. has anyone got some local knowledge what its like to bring up a young family there. what is the best sub (cheapest) for schools and beaches. thanks.

Depends where you live.

Beaches - the mid section of the Bay near Mordialloc might be worth a look at.

no only looking at the mo, not to sure whether we are upping sticks yet. no connections at all. did a skills test on the web and spoke to a visa bloke who said there is a shortage of trades but you look on the job sites and there dose not seam to be that many (perth especially) considering all the hype. spent weeks looking and still non the wiser were to go, and if its financially viable.

hi there

thanks for that, when you do your skills test how many points did you get? and did he advice you that you would need a job offer before going or could you get a skilled migrants visa.

we are definately going in the next 2 yrs or earlier, but we are looking at melbourne as perth is too hot all year round it has just reported over 30 degress for over 50 days which for a holiday is fantastic but to live with hit and work on a building site day in day out i think is too hot.

There is only a shortage of trades because local Australians aren't willing to do these jobs. You might be getting a good salary compared to the UK but it still can be tough to live on. People can deny this all they want but they are the days of being a well paid tradie are numbered in Australia. There are thousands of Irish Backpackers coming in a week now and the new visa changes will make is easier for them to stay. I doubt in a few years there will be a need for migration in the trades sector.

if your looking for cheap then Australia is not for you. It really is as simple as that. In answer to your question in terms of salaries and cost of living Melbourne will be much worse than Perth. The Bay Area in Melbourne and Inner Melbourne is good the rest of the city is a massive dump and the North West quandrant is no go as far I'm concerned. You also won't find Australians living out West of Melbourne grim as.

you have obviously never been to the UK. you sound like a very spoiled young man who has been very fortunate to be born as us english say "with a silver spoon in your mouth".

I have lived in the UK including a 6 month stint in Kirkby.

Melbourne has some great things as well. Truly international events, great weather in summer fantastic dining and eating out which no other city in Australia compares too. With regards to OQ I'm sure kids can have a great life there as they could with Perth or Adelaide etc.

hi there

did you mean kirkby in nottinghamshire or liverpool? cause again if you meant kirby in Liverpool this place is very high class now if you meant kirkby in nottinghamshire now there is a less desirable place.

Melbourne is a great place to live and is not a dump at all. Eyes of the beholder.

My children were brought up here on the Mornington Peninsula and they are fine, they loved it and probably will return to live at some stage.

I like the climate, the people, the lifestyle, nothing to complain about whatsoever and we have been here over thirty years.

Diversity is the name of the game and Melbourne has it.

What did they do, bulldoze it?

Kirkby and high class were not words I ever expected to hear in the same sentence.

only done the basic internet visa think, but got the full points. he phoned up the next day, had a chat ,and said no probs start when you are ready, all a bit to easy, what about you? you sound like you have done one of the hardest parts (making your mind up that you are definitely going) we have been a little bit discouraged with all the negativity around.

So you're are having a bit of a go at the poster for being born with a silver spoon in his mouth when his post focused on what he saw as being less desirable in Melbourne - yet you talk about a place now being a 'high class' area!
