Default Melbourne - Favourite Places To Eat

We're going to be heading to Melbourne when we migrate. On the occasions we've visited we ate in some great places, but I can't remember the name of any of them.

Any Melbourne-ians got any recommendations? Pictures would be a bonus.......and double points for pictures of the food

Hmm, too many to mention! You could get yourself a copy of The Age Good Food Guide....altho there's so many great places that aren't even in there.

Here's some of my favourites:
Breakfast/Lunch - The Fitz Cafe (Brunswick St , Fitzroy)
Atomica ((Brunswick St , Fitzroy)) (Atomica did best lattes in Melbourne for us)

The Stokehouse on the esplanade in St Kilda - great location, great food and great wine list.

Cafe Siena - Chapel St, Sth Yarra. (Casual dining, people watching, convenient for shops, etc)

Charcoal Grill on the Hill - Kew. Yummy steaks

Soul Mama - St Kilda Sea Baths - veggie food, beautiful location, quite laid back/informal, wonderful views of Bay

Been to a fewn nice Thai places too...cant remember names of any tho!!...one on Kew High St, one on Brunswick St, and one on Lygon St.

Italy 1 (I think it's called) - in the CBD, down a side street off Collins St at Paris end....sorry, that's so vague!!

Happy Eating!

Can't remember....

Gonna have to dig out the diaries we wrote when we were over there. They might well have some names of places we tried. Most of the places we went to were recommendations of friends, and they came with us.

My memory loss could also be because they encouraged us to drink far too much when we were with them

Echoing HiddenPaw, I love the Stokehouse, both downstairs and "fine dining" upstairs!

Other favourites:
Fenix - great food and wine...
http://www.fenix.com.au/gallery/gallery.html

Dine and Unwine - reasonably priced cafe on Hardware Lane - serves great homemade burgers and soups

Milano - tasty calzones and thin crust pizzas in CBD! Don't get the "Little Australian" though - was swimming with grease!

Koko - Japanese teppenyaki restaurant at Crown Casino; great view and ambience

Table 18 - great steaks and wine at Crown Casino

Waterfront - fresh seafood platter at Crown Casino

Sports Bar - at Crown Casino; decent finger food but that's not the reason you go there - it's got lots of large screens showing most important international sporting events 24 hours a day!

Japanese Teppanyaki Inn - 182 Colins Street; much better value than Koko but not as classy.

Pugg Mahone - north end of Hardware Lane - good Irish pub food, generous servings

Enjoy!

Mrs JTL

P.S. Picture of Iced Chocolate at Fenix - do I get double points for that?!

Hi Mrs JTL

Congrats, you certainly do get double points for that iced chocolate......I'm a big fan of iced blended coffees, anything chocolatey, smoothies etc....

You mentioning a couple of places at the casino reminded me that my first experience of calamari was in one of the bars there. My mate Paul recommended it as being pretty good and he was right.

I know its not to everyones taste, but I love the stuff now

I love Betty's (you know the one in York) style tearooms. Apart from the Windsor Hotel, is there anything like it in Melb.
Thanks

ahhhh Melbourne, some fantastic places to eat:

Mosskito in Clifton Hill is fantastic, the portions are ridulously huge, the atmosphere is really good, food excellent - the souvlaki (sic?) is immense!
Also, Jimmy Watsons on Lygon St, Nonyas on Lygon St, actually near enough anywhere on Lygon St!!!! Especially that big cake/cafe place which I can never remembe rthe namne of.

Cheers Bordy might not be that romantic as we may have the kids with us if they allow them.
