Default Melbourne Dominates Population Growth

For anyone interested the Australian Bureau of Statistics have recently released some statistics for population growth in Australian cities etc.

"The five areas with the largest growth in the country were all on the outskirts of Melbourne, with the largest increase in South Morang (up 32,200 people). Point Cook, Caroline Springs and Tarneit in Melbourne's west followed, each with growth of more than 20,000 people."

Perth had 26% growth, Brisbane 25%, Melbourne ??? Your statistic was only for individual suburbs of Melbourne, not Melb'n as a whole.

Was reading in the paper that people in the north were having a facebook thing/survey about how long they were travelling into work. South Morang was apparently really bad, and the recently new train station parking is full by 7.30 am. You'd think when the opened the station they would have given more consideration to parking!

Whoever wrote it, it's still misleading. And I'm basically a pacifist - I'm not into shooting people.

Melbourne urban development is a nightmare. The philosophy is to take in as many people as possible and just dump them out in the paddocks like cattle with next to no infrastructure, destroying prime farming land and natural environment in the process.

Meanwhile, most of the small towns and some regional centres in Victoria are on the way out and dying a slow death. I don't really agree with Australia's obsession with urbanisation. People don't embrace the country enough.

I totally agree with you PV however immigrants are always drawn to the cities in any country as that is the easiest place to get set up until you find your feet, especially for most of us with jobs.

One day I hope to live in Macedon or a similar location.

These photos I saw of Melbourne's urban sprawl always stuck in my mind:

Although it doesn't cover the growth question directly, you might find this site of interest : http://censusheat.greenlemon.com.au/

I would argue the opposite, given the world's ever growing population people need to move away from the country and into cities as country people have a far greater footprint on the planet than city dwellers. This is what's happening all over anyway, and Australia is a world leader in urbanisation, if only they could go up instead of spread out in 4x2s.
