As for the trains - its apparently quite a common thing, particularly between Sydney and Brisbane, for lots of level crossings.. hopefully, the restructuring of that system will be what gets us into Australia, MrDreamy being a railway planner

And further in pedantic mode on the transport system we should tell BB (Buzzy Bee not Badge's Back) that Spencer St station has been rebuilt and renamed Southern Cross station. Personally I think it's a pretty damn impressive building and I like it.
Developments in Melbourne CBD have very much shifted the emphasis westwards and southwards with Telstra Dome, Docklands, Southern Cross station, Convention Centre, Trade Centre, Southgate, Southbank, Casino, Aquarium, Collins, Flinders and Bourke Sts extensions etc.

This is not meant to in any way detract from BB's fantastic report.

In the evening it also goes around the loop clockwise from Flinders. I get on at Flinders as I then get a seat - even though it might be quicker from Parliament...
If you are coming in from the SE Suburbs, and work in S Melbourne/St Kilda Rd (for an IT job) then getting off at South Yarra and getting a pleasant tram knocks off a few stations, the loop and another tram from Flinders.......
cheers

BB A very impressive reccie report! I did a similar route to you and also loved the city and 'burbs.
I've just stocked up on goodies from the OZ shop in London (for Christmas stockings) including a calendar of Melbourne for me
Melbourne has to be my favourite city down under.
good luck with your plans to move there

Re: MELBOURNE - BUZZY'S RECCIE PART 2!!!
Just wanted to add my thanks Buzzy for the great report and the pics. Even my 11 year old read it and got excited! (that is where we are hoping to move to next year if we get our visa.)
We are thinking of the Mornington, Mount Eliza area so it was nice to see some pics of these areas. Do you and your family have any particular areas in mind that you would like to live?
Karen
P.S The buzzy babies are gorgeous.

Buzzy and the Buzzettes...
Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with us. A great write up, cracking pics too. It's really whetted our appetites, roll on January (we are hoping to fly on the 14th).
How do you rate the Big4 site. we will need to arrange short term accomodation prior to getting a rental once we arrive.
Cheers, Loz

Great post. Was dying to read part 2 as we're moving to Melbourne next month. Will be staying with friends in Mount Martha and hope to stay somewhere in the peninsula.
Buzzy Bee - I have 1 question - what's the name of the great pie shop in Mount Martha?
Cheers David

Nice topic. I wish I had written a diary of events on my recent trip. My travelling partner did write something. Perhaps when I read his it will jog my memory and I'll remember what I observed too on certain days.
Can I ask Buzzy what his profession is and how he managed to get agency interviews? When called in or phoned a few and nobody wanted to see me. Here I was, CV in hand, in AUSTRALIA and nobody wanted to talk to me unless I had a visa.!

Perhaps people should consider Melbourne before paying over inflated housing prices to live in Pom Mecca Perth.

I did this for 6 months, it is quicker to walk up Toorak Road than sit on a tram, it gets stuck at the lights on Pump Road forever. It takes 15-20 minutes max to walk to St Kilda Road and is a very pleasant walk.
I suppose it depends were you work, but I was next door to the Police headquarters so it wasn't too bad.

Wow Buzzy, thats some report! You could have sold Melbourne to me now! Thing is, we do have a choice of Melbourne or Brissy, Brissy for the climate, but Melbourne is now calling!
Firts stop is Malta though, so will give us time to think, but I am sure a trip to Melbourne is definately on the cards. Funny enough the agent from Melbourne rang us again last night seeing if we had changed our minds about the Malta job and company. They have 3 clients all wanting to speak to Mr R? Dilemma??
Still, great report, felt like I was almost there whilst reading it!
Thanks for that Buzzy.
PS See Mrs Buzzy Snr is still of the same mind set. Nothing changes eh Buzzy?
