We went this year to both places (aswell as Perth and Sydney) over a 4 week period and we fell in love with Gold Coast area. It's a very touristy area and has beautiful beaches (white sand, blue sea etc.) so jobs may be hard to come by but it's not that far from Brisbane. I've heard the Sunshine Coast is even better and some people commute to Brissy from there too.
Whilst in Melbourne it never stopped raining (so probably didn't help our first impression) but after seeing Queensland, for us, there was no competition.
Obviously there's a big difference in weather too between the two areas so we hope to visit again to experience an Ozzy summer in Queensland to see if we can cope with the humidity and heat.
Just our opinion though!!

The fact that there are far more arty jobs means that you will
a) have a job,
b) probably find like minded people to make friends with, and
c) enjoy your weekends more with galleries and exhibitions etc.
What is a graphic repro artist by the way?
At the moment I am living on the Gold Coast near Brisbane and looking to move away from it. You can always head up to Qld for your holidays.

Re: Melbourne or Brisbane
Should be an easy decision to make because they are complete opposites.
Qld, laid back, hot summers, lovely winters, plenty of beaches, casual dress, more of a holiday feel.
Melbourne, more euro City feel, smarter dress in City, very cold wet winters, erratic summers, just generally more of a City buzz.
More to do in way of theatre, arts, cultural, shops.
2 totally different places in other words. Are you City slickers or beach bums

For what it is worth:
If you want to live in a climate like the southeast of the UK in a funky city, Melbourne. I lived there for 30 odd years and didn't get any 'shock' moving to the UK, i.e. it wouldn't be much of a change for you either if that's what you're after. They say that if you don't like the weather you should wait another five minutes.
If you want to live in the sun in a city that seems to be on permanent holiday (in a cultural wasteland), Brisbane. People from NSW and Vic joke that you have to set your watch back 50 years when you cross the Qld border. Everyone in Qld talks like that crocodile hunter idiot.

We're leaving Melbourne (back to UK) but we said if we come back to Oz in say 12 months, we will probably head for the Sunshine Coast (hinterland).
We've realised we're not really 'big city' people (too noisy, too much traffic, too rushed, not close to countryside, etc). However, it is an amazing city for diversity of things to do - so much of everything - sport, bars, restaurants, cool suburbs, shopping, beach, arts/culture.....and at the moment, sunshine!
We came to Mel over Adelaide as job prospects were better for us. But now we want something a bit more laid back and Qld may have the answer long-term. (Job wise, I am currently retraining so way we won't have to rely on being close to a city to find work.)
As every one else says, it really does depend what you want out of life.
Good luck
