Re: Melbourne areas
Check out this site for Expats views of Melbourne suburbs:-

Personally, I'm not sure that I would live in Chelsea, Edithvale, Aspendale, Carrum, Bonbeach because there is a busy road called the Nepean Highway and a busy rail line running right through the middle of them. Patterson Lakes might be your best bet in this area. If I didn't live in Mornington I would probably live in Beaumaris, Black Rock, Berwick, Narre Warren, Templestowe, Balwyn or Frankston South

As my family will no doubt testify I am dreadful at keeping in touch. I usually read my pm's first thing at work and think I'll reply later from home. Which rarely happens. Suitably scolded and pm response on the way soon !

So hard to decide on areas before you arrive, have a good look around when you get here and I'm sure the right thing will turn up. If you have any further questions just ask!

I have a 3 year old girl, so need to keep schools, things to do, beaches!! etc.. into consideration.
Presume South/South East of Melbourne is going to be best bet (though feel free to correct me), but are there any areas that should be avoided?
Working on the presumption that accomodation will be cheaper the further out from the CBD we go!
Thanks,

Re: Melbourne areas
As usual people can't see beyond south east or east.
My recommendation - Williamstown/Williamstown North/Newport! 20 minutes from CBD by train, quicker by car most times, on the water (3 sides), schools etc aplenty but more expensive than probably all the suburbs mentioned except Balwyn. There's quite a lot of rental property though - just go into domain.com.au or realestate.com.au or realestateview.com.au and select Victoria and Williamstown or use it's postcode 3016 (Newport = 3015).
A few images attached to give you a flavour.
Good luck.

We were thinking of Williamstown... Arriving in Oz in May 2006. Any more photos / opinions of Williamstown would be gratefully accepted... I think lots of people seem to start off there but then move ... why
Thanks

Only 'cos these are the only bits I know so far.
Williamstown is a great suburb but it can get really busy on market days and the main (only) route in and out of Melbourne can get a bit of a bottleneck at times I hear.
