Check out this site for Expats views of Melbourne suburbs:-

http://s7.invisionfree.com/BritVics/...p?showforum=13

Personally, I'm not sure that I would live in Chelsea, Edithvale, Aspendale, Carrum, Bonbeach because there is a busy road called the Nepean Highway and a busy rail line running right through the middle of them. Patterson Lakes might be your best bet in this area. If I didn't live in Mornington I would probably live in Beaumaris, Black Rock, Berwick, Narre Warren, Templestowe, Balwyn or Frankston South

Whoops !

As my family will no doubt testify I am dreadful at keeping in touch. I usually read my pm's first thing at work and think I'll reply later from home. Which rarely happens. Suitably scolded and pm response on the way soon !

No probs! I usually do the same thing with e-mails from back home - I read them and think about replying, then weeks go past and I'm not sure if I did actually reply or just thought about it (old age you see! - me, not you!!)

Cheers! (Sorry for hijacking your thread Wigan Wanderer!) Better contribute something useful now... we live 10k north east of the cbd in Ivanhoe, lovely area, nice schools, parks etc. Nearest beach about 30 mins, ocean beach 75 mins. Other nice areas up here are greensborough, eltham and surrounds. We're not bothered about being too close to the beach - prefer the greenery and parks up here, also hubby has to commute to the cbd and goes by train (25 mins).
So hard to decide on areas before you arrive, have a good look around when you get here and I'm sure the right thing will turn up. If you have any further questions just ask!

Presume South/South East of Melbourne is going to be best bet (though feel free to correct me), but are there any areas that should be avoided?

Working on the presumption that accomodation will be cheaper the further out from the CBD we go!

Thanks,
Martin
We live in Mitcham and will be moving down the road to Nunawading, next year. Although we are not too close to any beaches, we are near to one of the train lines into the city, which takes roughly 40 mins to get to the CBD. An added bonus would be that we could swap sob stories about our respective teams in the 2005 Super League season.

As usual people can't see beyond south east or east.

My recommendation - Williamstown/Williamstown North/Newport! 20 minutes from CBD by train, quicker by car most times, on the water (3 sides), schools etc aplenty but more expensive than probably all the suburbs mentioned except Balwyn. There's quite a lot of rental property though - just go into domain.com.au or realestate.com.au or realestateview.com.au and select Victoria and Williamstown or use it's postcode 3016 (Newport = 3015).

A few images attached to give you a flavour.

Good luck.

Hi,
We were thinking of Williamstown... Arriving in Oz in May 2006. Any more photos / opinions of Williamstown would be gratefully accepted... I think lots of people seem to start off there but then move ... why

Thanks

Only 'cos these are the only bits I know so far.

Williamstown is a great suburb but it can get really busy on market days and the main (only) route in and out of Melbourne can get a bit of a bottleneck at times I hear.
