Melbourne ambulance services-it ain't free !

If you need basic ambulance services in Melbourne ,the start cost is $735 and can rise to many thousands of dollars.
If you are involved in a car accident , the ambulance fees are covered and as you lie bloodied and bruised, you will be ofered a choice of public or private hospitals.
The transport accident commission (TAC) insures all victorians for injury bills and compensation arising from a traffic accident.This includes pedestrians,passengers, on public transport,cyclists and motor cyclists.

However if you need an ambulance for non transport accident matters,you have to pay the bill if you are not a member of the Ambulance Service.
The cost is $50 per year for singles and $100 a year for families.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
This covers you for emergency transport, MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance)and treatment,air ambulance costs and all non emergency ambulance transport costs.

Enrolling should be near the top of your list of priorities after you arrive .

We are with NIB and we paid $51 for family cover.

We don't have any other private health insurance, but we also thought it was imperative to take out ambulance cover.

Yes they have. $90.20 per year is added to every electric bill, (quarterly instalments) and everyone in QLD is covered by the blanket scheme.

So what happens if you're covered in your home state, but need an ambulance while visiting a neighbouring state? Are there reciprocal agreements?

In Country WA St John Ambulance cover is administered by the local St John Sub Centres. Country Ambulance cover is only available for country residents who live in the following postcode zones: 6041-6044 & 6084, 6207-6208, 6211- 6799.

Your membership directly benefits your local centre with delivering vital ambulance and First Aid services to the community.

In the Metropolitan St John Ambulance has not operated the ambulance cover administration since 1997. The Health Benefit Fund (HBF) administers the HBF St John Ambulance cover.

You are definitely covered anywhere in Australia if you are resident in Queensland, dont know about the other states.
