Hi

This is in the wrong part of the forum for this type of question, so probably won't get many replies...don't worry though, a Mod will probably come along & move it shortly

Mel has a huge variety of properties...once this is moved you can get some ideas of what type of area would suit you & your needs & then you can get an idea of houses from there.

You should be able to get something for around than your figure though

You are better off asking a moderator to move your query to the main Australia section, a lot of people actually living in Australia already don't tend to hang around the immigration area of the forum.

You could try the below sites to search on houses below $500k in the Melbourne area. This will at least provide an idea of how far your money would go.

Melbourne SE. Look at the end of the M1.

Stacks of them.

And some ain't all bad. Even around Berwick too - 40min drive, more by train. Probably the best of the SE. Areas between Berwick and Dandenong, whilst closer to city not that nice at all but cheap.

There are areas to the N and NE too which come in budget.

Caveat is that some of these places are only less than 45 mins if you drive outside rushhour, or maybe more than train.

There are of course others.

We live in the north eastern suburbs and you can still get houses for around the $500k mark about 40 mins from the CBD by train. It really depends what you are looking for though:
- size, type and condition of house
- size of land
- amenities
- beach or not
- public transport
- road network

Give us a bit more info and we should be able to help more.

Looking at 3 bedroom house that doesn't require too much work/modernisation, i.e. can move straight in.
Not too fussed about land, just want an outdoor eating/patio area and enough space for a trampoline. Though prefer to stay away from townhouse and the strata
School is important, so a decent public school not too far away.
Would be nice to have parks/ovals/guides or the like not too far away for 7yr old daughter.
Got a car so shops at least 10-15mins drive away.
Near transport links to the city as want to stay a one car family and get train to work.
Would be nice to be less than an hours drive away from beach.

We currently live in Waitara in Sydney which would be ideal if we could afford it! Westfield/train/school in 10 mins walk and 40 mins from city & beach.

We're in Montmorency, between Greensborough and Eltham (if you need to look it up ) and we love it. This area is very wooded, with a bush feel to it. Greensborough is more suburbian, but Montmorency and Eltham feel a bit more country. You can still (just about) get the kind of house you're looking for around here and neighbouring suburbs for around $500k. If prices stabilise or drop, then $500k would certainly get you a 3 bed house. We paid $512k (at Christmas) for a 120sqm 3-bed house on a 680 sqm block with shops and the train station less than a 2 minute-walk away. The CBD is 35-45 minutes by train (express or non-express). We also only have one car and have no need for a second one.

A smaller block than ours would be cheaper. You will always pay a premium for proximity to public transport and schools so prices can vary hugely thoughout the larger suburbs such as Greensborough or Eltham.

For schools, have a look at the myschool website. Around here there are a couple of primary schools that look good and Eltham High School has a really good reputation and results. There are parks and ovals everywhere you look as well! Every one of the suburbs around here seems to have a scouts hall (not sure about guides) and there is a great community spirit.

We have a huge Westfield (Doncaster) less than 15 minutes away and both Eltham and Greensborough have really good shopping centres.

Beach (as in Port Phillip Bay beach) is only about 45 minutes away and the road network is surprisingly good (I was expecting the worst) to get to varied places, as long as you avoid peak times.

I am sure other people will come along and give you other options. Just thought I'd describe our little corner of Victoria
