Hi Beth,
You have to pay for your prescriptions here,as for the cost it depends on what tablets you take?
Medicare can help out once youve paid out over $850 in script costs within a year, dont know too much about the ins & outs of it but others on her can advise you better.
You could look at this site, maybe get a idea of what your medication will cost you? www.epharmacy.com.au

I have to take 3 different meds per day and it is quite costly. Depends what it is really, but on average mine are around $20 a script.

Hi
Where do you buy your medication from Linda if you dont mind me asking.
Does each script last a month?
Did you have to have your medical records to buy your medication?
Do you not get any help in paying for them?
Thanks for the info

Thanx for that site.
Have looked at it and it has some of my tablets but maybe my other tablets have different names.
Will have a look at the names on the boxes later then look them up.
Thanx again

I just go to a GP and get a prescription on medicare which is very similar to NHS. Over here you can go to any doctor you choose. You dont have to stick to the same one. Then i just go to any pharmacy just like in UK. Each one does last about a month, one a little more than that. The meds i have are subsidised a bit but i still pay the $20.
I have never provided medical records since leaving UK. When i first arrived in Aus i just turned up at a doctors surgery told him my condition. I was then sent to a specialist just to confirm what meds were right for me and to make sure things hadnt changed. Since then i have just kept taking the meds prescribed.
Do be aware though, that sometimes if you need to see a specialist for your condition you may have to pay part of the fee.

http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/...safety_net.htm
There are two safety net thresholds - one for general patients and the other for Concession Card patients.
The general patient safety net threshold is currently $874.90. (2005 rates). When patients and/or their families reach this amount, they can apply for a Safety Net Concession Card and pay only $4.60 per prescription for the rest of the calendar year.
The concessional safety net threshold is $239.20 (this also applies to gold, white and orange card-holders under the RPBS). Once patients and/or their families reach this amount, they can apply for a Safety Net Entitlement Card and receive items free of charge for the rest of the calendar year.
Brand premiums, therapeutic group premiums and special patient contributions do not count towards the safety net thresholds.
The thresholds may be adjusted on 1 January each year in line with inflation.
