Default Medicare vs Private Health care

We are moving to Oz in August as a Permanant residents, my query is:

As we cannot avail of Australian health care for 2 years, is there such companies as BUPA or simlair companies will offer health care like in UK/Ireland if you subscribe ?

Many thanks.

Hi IrishMolly,

Permanent residents are entitled to health care services from the day they arrive.

Just show at a Medicare shop and they will issue a card for you...

Cheers....

Enrique.-

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

So, for example, if we arrive and after a few days someone needs to see a doctor (hopefully not) does Medicare pay for us or give us a 100% refund ?

I always thought we would not be covered for the first 2 years in Australia and need to pay for all our medical visits out of our own pockets ?

Thanks again.

It may not be 100% refund, but normally between 75% and 100%.

If you find a Doctor that "Bulk Bills", then you pay nothing.

But a lot of doctors now charge higher than the government scheduled fee, and it is the extra that you need to pay.

Some doctors will ask you to pay the entire fee, say $40, and then claim the medicare portion back, say $33

Others will just charge you the $7, and get the $33 from medicare themselves.
