It depends what medication he is prescribed. Our son (ADD) was put onto Ritalin LA, we didn't receive any help from Medicare, but we found out that we were eligible to a care allowance from CentreLink. We followed this up, and the money did compensate the outgoing cost of the drug.
We have since taken him off of this tablet after talking to a Natraupath in Perth, he now takes a number of alternative tablets. The results have been quite exciting, he had his appetite back, doesn't walk around in a zombie state, is doing just as well at school and is on the whole a lot happier and less moody.

Friends of ours moved to OZ with there child who had been diagnosed with ADHD and after a while they changed there medication and he improved so much he was just like a different person and now he is on nothing at all.

I think they have a better way of dealing with it out there but its becoming more and more common in this country now.

The 3 most common drugs for ADHD in Australia are Dexamphetamine, Ritalin & the newer drug Concerta. Depending on the severity your child may be entitled to a health care card which will give them prescriptions at a discounted rate (from memory, currently around $4.50) instead of the full rate ($30 for Dex or about $45 for Ritalin LA, dont know how much Concerta is as we've not tried it yet) or even a carers allowance (for you). Medicare is only there to cover treatment by doctors & in hospital, depending on whether you take your child to a public hospital for treatment or to a private specialist, if you take out private health insurance you may also be able to claim some of the costs of private consultations & psychological testing throught your private health fund.

I have read a thread on here that after you have spent x-amount of dollars on prescriptions a year the rest are free or refunded - will check it out and get back to you.
