Default Medicare

Hi,

Can anyone advise how healthcare works between arrival and registering for Medicare? ie if one of the kids gets ill and needs to see a dr, what do we do?

Also, according to the Medicare website, we should wait 7-10 days before registering. Have others done this, or is it possible to register immediately?

Thanks,
John

We registered the day after landing. We had an address and PR visa, so went and applied while we were in the city opening bank accounts, etc.

If your child gets sick in between landing and registering for medicare you could use your NHS card for reciprocal care.

Our emigration travel insurance covers for 21 days which should be sufficient until medicare is sorted out. Something for you to possibly consider?

We had to wait about a week before registering. I was told that we were covered from arrival even though we were not registered.
