Medicare
Hi there,
We've only just started the SIR process (one week ago)..so it's very early days. This site is so useful though..jut love it.
I have a question that I hope you guys can answer. When / if we get to Adelaide what will our position be with regards to medical care (should the worst happen). Our visa is temporary for 2 years, then we apply for permanent residency (after working for 12 months of that..but it'll need to be more!).
Do we qualify for medicare..or will we need to get our own private health insurance for the first 2 / 3 years, depending on how long PR takes?

Hi Carol Ann
For a SIR Visa it is recommended that temporary residents take a private insurance. However i think Oz has some health arrangement with countries like U.K which would mean therefore you will be able to have access to Medicare if you are a Sir visa holder.

Re: Medicare
Reciprocal medicare is limited in scope and if the SIR visa has a condition obliging you to have health insurance, then being entitled to reciprocal medicare won't necessarily substitute.

Thanks for your replies. I did actually ask my agent this and she said we would be covered..but I'm so cynical..I didn't believe her...eeeeee..that's shocking eh.
