Jo

You can even claim non prescription items on tax too like over the counter headache tablets as long as you bought them at the chemist.

So......if one buys stuff like Nurofen, antihistamines, anti-inflammatory pills etc, all for genuine medical reasons, but the stuff isn't on prescription, then as long as you buy it in a chemist you can claim against tax? :fingerscrossed:

Yes. All of them. But, as you might already know, you must be more than $1500 out of pocket on medical expenses for the year. Ever dollar out of pocket over $1500 you can claim 20 cents in the dollar.

See: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/co...tent/19181.htm

If an accountant tells you otherwise don't believe them. Some of them don't realise as the published wording is very vague.

Soon adds up over a year though. I new there was a threshold but didn't know it could apply to non-prescription items, thanks.

Link to the Medicare safety net scheme. I've just signed up.........as I think I will definitely hit the threshold on my own, without help from the family this year!

But if you do it as a family all your prescriptions drop to the lowest rate
which was $5.40

need to register with pharmacy for PBS scripts and they will keep an eye on when you reach the $1164 threshold for this particular threshold as its different from the out of pocket expense one.

Re: medical threshold

Hi,

I have 2 questions in this regard,

1- Is any kind of dental/dentistry expenses can be calculated toward this 1400$ threshold? Like if I have two route canals and pay say 1500 dollars for the route canals...

2- Do both of my wife and I have to separately register? Or is it enough that one of us register since there is a "partner's information" section in my registration form?

Thank you

Thank you

ALL -Medical / Dental / Physio can be claimed on the Tax after the threshold
( this includes any Hospital costs over and above Insurance )

The second one is Safety Net which ( I think ) you should both be registered

[*]travel or accommodation expenses associated with medical treatment
Probably not relevant to a lot but if you live 100 kms (200km ? ) from specialist treatment there is a subsidy for travel and accommodation (I know NSW,QLD and WA have this ) IPTAAS

...

Exactly. As long as you buy them from a chemist and bought them because you have a headache at the time (of course I did sir) then you can claim them. No prescription necessary.
