Default medical records

I had a natter with my doc on the phone this morning, wont bore you with the details, but i asked him what happens with our records when we go, how long will they take to transfer. To this he answered no time at all they wont go, now this stunned me, according to him my records are for the good of the health service and not me and as such when i get to oz i will have no medical past. He did concede that they would give me photocopies of anything relevent like past problems, kids vaccinations and my labour notes from when the boys were born.

Is this what everyone else has found out too? How has it worked when you've applied for private health cover, surely they need to know about any pre existing conditions? or am i talking bollocks again?

Hi Lynn speak to heather. She's got all our medical history from the GP. I think it cost us £25 but its certainly got everything in there (Hence why Heaths is the size of war and peace )

They are your medical records and you are entitled to them

i asked for copies of our records for when we went for our medicals....no charge at all!!!
i also had copies of letters from consultants when my oldest daughter was seeing a paediatrician...other than that we had no real need to worry cos so far we have all been ok..

your medical records just go back to the local health authority or remain with your gp. one thing that i did do though was inform them when we were all leaving so that i wasnt asked for a smear again....cos they get penalised if they cant get you to go for one!!!!(im a practice nurse!!)..i also kept a copy of the letter that i got from the Health authority re that too...

Under the Data Protection Act you are entitled to a copy of your medical records. Won't be the originals and you might have to pay, but legally you are entitled to have them.

You are entitled to copies but only from a certain date i believe.
The doctors use to write things on your record in the past such as.

What a pain in the arse.
That woman is nuts.
Nothing wrong with that lazy sod.
Another hypo.
Will be dead soon and save the NHS some cash.
Not for 222 ( no resusitation)
and so on.

It would not be fair on the doctor to disclose these notes.

You are entitled to all of your notes, these include:
What you were complaining of
What they diagnosed you as having
What they perscribed you
And any follow on treatments eg referals

My notes also included the birth horror stories and any current medication, hence being as matt said, the size of war and peace Cost us £30.

:scared: my god did my doctor really write all that about me, just in 1 visit:scared:

H

I sincerely hope you are putting that in your container or your double baggage allowance will be waisted

Kylie

Get out your surgical gloves again and your zinc and caster oil and remember the massage technique described, I'm going to breif John in all the gory details to tell the delivery person when junior decides to come out, so they can be fully versed on my amazing blood loss, previous internal tapestries and general fear of anything that involves pain.

And to everyone else

Thanks for your info, this is obviously something else doctors know bugger all about, neither of us have anything on going or life threatening in our past, but we are a bit concerned that we may have a problem getting private health insurance if we have no records, so i guess i have to go and face the ...............:scared: receptionist:scared:

Just an update - I've been in to my surgery, who said yes, I could have a copy of everything, its all been photocopied - about 25 sheets in all, letters from specialists + ordinary notes. Cost me £8.70. Nothing serious in there, just useful to have. If you get any problems contact your local health authority as you ARE entitled to the notes.

However - what I'm not so pleased about is - there is a letter in the notes from a specialist, to our then family doctor, regarding a minor operation that my MOTHER had! It has the result of the tests and everything, and clearly states my mum's name and date of birth. we had the same doctor at the time - but this was in 1978, its been in MY notes ever since!
Also - even more worrying, in 1971 there was a woman in our village with the same name as me - but I was 7, and she was 28! It seems she had her tonsils out & I have the hospital "notes on discharge" to prove it! So since 1971, every doctor I have had has believed I had no tonsils........ I think I'd remember spending a week in hospital having them removed.......

Thats quite scary, 2 different surgeries have managed to enclose the wrong notes in my file. My mum's letter could have been quite important judging by what is written. Make sure you check each sheet carefully - it may well not be yours.
