Medical notes/dentist notes???

I asked both my doctor and my dentist for a copy of my notes they say they do not do this and that the new doctor or dentist will start from scratch??
Surely they need to know what you have had done and your past medical history including allergies???
I am allergic to mecury fillings and some of the preservatives in injections so surely they should allow me to take my notes or at least a copy of them?? They are my notes after all surely I have rights to take them if I want to?

I had this problem. My doctor said that any notes are not allowed out of the country:confused:
When i got to OZ, the kids schools wanted to know what injections the kids have already had. I sent my doctor in the UK a letter and they sent me a copy of all immunisations.
Dentist said same as your's.

you have every right under the data protection act to take a copy of your notes, you may have to pay but it is your legal right. Unless you have a complex medical history medical notes are pointless but obviously in the case of your dental treatment it is important any future dentist knows about your allergies.

Hi there,

I phoned my doctors and asked them the same question. I 'm not sure that you need them but if I wanted them she said it would probably cost me £50 each person!

I am phoning back next week to sort it out.

Regarding dentist they will start from scratch I would think with new x-rays etc, same as if you went to a new dentist here. Obviously if you have allergies you will know about them and will have to put them down on froms etc.

Contacted our doctors this week and they said no problem just put it in writing and they will put them on a CD for us.

We left 4 months ago. As an ex UK GP - yes you are entitled to copies of your notes. You will be charged for it though. The original records themselves are owned by the NHS so they remain in the UK. You need to allow 4 weeks for the copies but most places will issue them sooner if they are organised.

Having said all that I took both medical and dental for myself and family and when you register over here generally they don't mind if you have the records or not. The only thing I would say if anyone has a child under 5 take the red book becasue they are interested in immunisations records. There are some subtle differences - namely varicella and hep B
