Not sure that is really answerable with no details about you. Where are you from? What visa are you on etc? Are you on a good income (if over a certain level it is cheaper to have it than not).

Well then you don't need it, you have full medicare so it is just whether you choose to take it or not.

You won't be paying the extra levy on your income either, but be aware that if you expect your joint income to arise over a certain level, I think about 150k but not sure, and you don't take out private cover in your first year in Australia it will be more expensive as you will have to pay an age weighting (for every year over 30).

We have been here just over a year and only have Medicare - Choosing health care cover is upto the individual I guess and whether you can afford it. Quite pricey. We have a work colleague who is an Australian, who recently suffered a cardiac arrest - taken straight to hospital for surgery. He was given option of whether he wanted to go to the 'public' hospital or go private. He chose to go private only to be landed with a $17,000 bill for his treatment as his 'private' health cover did not include anything cardio related!!! So be warned if you do choose, be sure to check what it covers!
