Maybe OZ Needs More IT People Than They Think ! - Just kidding
I find it difficult to understand that in the days of fully redundant communication links, Web Server farms with redundant Clustered Databases servers etc that a site as important has the official Australian web site is unavailable for most of the day! Not even a redirected URL indicating a maintenance period etc..
Just a thought.

Maybe the problem's at your end with too many IT people. Is there anyone in the UK who aren't in IT? I never have a problem with any Australian sites, however when I try to access UK sites the server often shits itself. You also have to remember that between the UK and Aus there is a lot of distance, and distance that goes through some fairly busy and infrastructure poor countries.

The website is indeed down yesterday, and Singapore (where I am) is much
nearer to Au than the UK, mind you. Indeed the website went down at a most
inopportune time, right after I read about MODL changes in other postings.
Fortunately I found out this morning when the site is up again that my MODL
was not affected.
BTW internet links between major continents go through submarine cables and
satelite links, "not some fairly busy and infrastructure poor countries".
Such countries are lacking in internet connections in the very first place,
so don't even talk about routning major internet links through them.
Cheers

So there is a submarine cable directly linking Europe with Australia that passes through no infrastructure poor countries? Ah huh. The infrastructure in these countries is so poor that it can barely handle voice traffic let alone internet. I do know there is a cable from Aus to Asia, but I also happen to know it is at capacity now. Telstra are currently laying new cables. Beyond that I can't explain why you are having problems. Are you sure it's this end? A "cannot find server" message appears if the line is overloaded, not just if the server is down.

The comment was made because a government server was "DOWN" for over 12 hours. In most companies you
would get 'canned' for having such an important site down.
It has NOTHING to do with where we are access the site from.
When a site is DOWN, it is DOWN to the whole world.
And just a last thought. I'M NOT IN THE UK!!!!!!!
