Maternity pay for expats
My husband flies to Australia on a subclass 457 visa on New Years day 2012. I am due to join him in the first week of May - I have no job to go to.
I have just found out that I am pregnant and will be flying a week before I enter my third trimester. I know that if I stayed in the UK but left my job I would still be entitled to SMP direct from UK government rather than via an employer. Does anyone know if there's any chance that this could carry over as I leave the UK? I expect I'll just lose out but thought it was worth asking!

You won't be eligible for anything from the Australian government on a 457. As far as SMP in the UK goes, this page on the UK Directgov website may help.

"Once you become entitled to or if you are already getting SMP and then go abroad, your employer must pay you SMP".
