Maternity

Hi - I am coming to Sydney in Feb 2011 on a 457 visa. I was wondering if anyone know about statutory maternity for people on a 457 visa. We need to know for the future.
thanks.

No maternity benefits AFAIK http://www.familyassist.gov.au/payme...ts-general.php And probably a few dirty looks from an employer who would prefer that a worker works and doesnt take time off to have kids when they are being sponsored.

I thought you had to be earning a set wage on a 457?

If thats the case, unless your employer has made provisions for maternity in your contract it might be a no go as the Government dont pay baby bonus or maternity pay to temp visa holders.

Thanks for comments.....It's more of a fact finding mission than an intention....its called being prepared!

Of course a man who is on a 457 visa can have a partner who is pregnant and would not be doing anything wrong at all.

I can't imagin your visa would be valid if you as the 457 visa stopped working to have a baby though, as a 457 visa is supposed to be full time work. Hardly full time if you are off for 6 months or more.......

.

I was thinking that too. :)

Nevertheless Supertoots, if I were thinking of trying for pregnancy, I am not sure I would not be planning to come to Australia on a temporary visa that is conditional upon my employment.

I think you need prevention rather than preparation until you are no longer on a 457 ;)
