Married to Kiwi - Moving to Australia (Advice needed)

Good afternoon,

I’m hoping someone may be able to help me out with my query.

I have been in NZ for 4.5 years and have permanent residency. I married my partner in January who is a NZ citizen. She is wanting to move to Australia for better pay being a primary school teacher. Now since I’m a Brit, with only residency and not a citizen. Would I be able to go along with her “indefinitely” as kiwis are able to?

Or, would I be needing to apply for a special visa (working holiday initially or something)

In short, i’d be looking to continue my property management role in Australia without needing to apply for special work visas etc.

Any info on this would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I'd suggest staying another 6 months and getting your NZ citizenship. this would make so much sense.

Thanks for the response. I would be looking to do that anyway but should that not all go through for whatever reason, am I still eligible to go with my wife since she’s an NZ citizen or would I need to do a similar visa process as I did when I initially moved to NZ?

Sorry, I just spluttered coffee all over the screen - pay for primary teachers may be more but has your wife checked out how many young Aussie primary teachers can’t get jobs? Not in places that anyone wants to live anyway. Otherwise, you’ll need a NZ family relationship visa (461) if you don’t get NZ citizenship beforehand.

Concur with quoll. You can come and stay indefinitely, but unless your spouse already has contacts, getting a job as a primary teacher in Australia in any of the capital cities or nicer regional areas is going to be extremely, extremely tough going. She had better be prepared to do relief for several years.

All that nothing new under the sun. OP's spouse needs to be on the ground and speaking to principals directly, to gauge hiring conditions and prospects. Very likely to be told to do casual relief as a starting point as the hiring pool for decent jobs is very intense and competitive. The odds of being able to walk into a decent primary teaching job as an overseas-qualified teacher, even from NZ, are remote. There was a time when that could happen but those days ended about a decade ago.

Hi Adam, job prospects aside, the visa you would need if you did not have New Zealand citizenship is the 461. It's a 5 year set period temporary visa with full unrestricted work rights which is renewable at the end of 5 years provided you do not fail the character or medical requirements.

New Zealanders also get a visa on arrival (despite the fact that most of them don't realise this), it's called the SCV444 and it is also a temporary visa, though with no end date.

Neither of you will be eligible for Medicare unless you can prove you have moved here permanently (a document indicating a house sale in NZ, or a long term rental agreement here would suffice). As a 461 holder who has not migrated directly from the UK, you may not be eligible for Medicare at all, which would mean you would need private health insurance. 444 holders are considered permanent residents for some things and temporary residents for others.

Please make sure your wife is definitely not an Australian permanent resident before you come. She may well be and not be aware of it. For instance, if she was in Australia on Feb 26th 2001, even just passing through, she would probably be a permanent resident.

Hope that helps.
