Thumbs up Mandurah named one of the world's most liveable communities

For those of you still undecided about giving Mandurah a go:

"Mandurah has been named one of the world's most liveable communities after it was placed third in its category of the 2006 International Liveable Communities Awards and gained a silver award for its finals presentation in Hangzhou, China, on November 11."

Just pipped to second by Tonglu in the People’s Republic of China !!

Maybe if Mandurah starts publicly executing criminals, eating dogs and locking up political dissidents they might win next year -

We have been here since Sept 12th now and it seems to work well for us, everything here you need, even if it does get a little busy in the peak season.

Playground of the wealthy I think I heard it called not so long ago.....

Just read today's local paper, the Visitor Centre has launched a new website promoting the city http://www.visitmandurah.com/.

If only we'd had the foresight to invest in land when we first moved here We have seen so many changes in Mandurah over the years, and it's all for the better. It's hard to believe that back in 2001 when I first started posting on here, no-one had heard of the place.

After this I just had to check out number one, and was not disappointed to see that somewhere in Belgium has that honour. Clearly a parallel universe.

Yeah. Being recommended by a state that executed over 15,000 people from 1997 - 2001 is not necessarily a good one.

I'm somewhat baffled as to the criteria used to award a place a 'liveable' award when Tirana, Albania wins one and so does a place in Nigeria.

Perhaps my perception of Albania and Nigeria is seriously misguided as I'd always been led to believe they were ...... um ..... well...

sh*t-holes.

It must be awful living in a sh*t-hole.

I just dont get the whole Mandurah thing? To me its just a major traffic jam on the way Margaret River, the traffic getting round that place can be a nightmare. added about 30mins to our journey a couple of weekends ago getting through/round it.
Ive been there a number of times and it just seems to be mass housing all the same everywhere with more being created everyday.
Its almost like a big suburb that's just got out of control, we stayed there when visiting the boat show one year and there was little or no choice on the restaurant front. It just did nothing for me and I couldnt see a reason why you would live that far away from Perth (other than to maybe be an hour closer to the South West)
I fully appreciate each to there own etc, but I cant understand the volume that have gone there, it reminds me of Milton Keynes in the old days.

Hi all

Just caught this thread after replying to another one a minute ago. I think we ought to stop keep praising Mandurah and start telling people all the bad things about it so they stop coming. What do you think? In fact can you think of any that aren't being address by the shire or the state?

Perhaps the headline should be that Mandurah was 2nd among 47 communities from 15 countries who bothered to enter this competition in Hangzhou, China? It's a bit of a far cry from Mandurah named one of the world's most liveable communities much as it must be a nice place.

All these 'most liveable' surveys are a load of bollox. They are usually aimed at business executives who need to relocate for a few years, like the one that has Melbourne in 1st or 2nd place every year. Melbourne is okay but hardly the best place in the world.

The best place in the world is the place where you are the happiest.

The survey which consistently places Melbourne as one of the 'most liveable places in the world' is conducted by that esteemed institution The Economist Intelligence Unit and is far from bollocks (or bollox if you prefer). I just make the point that this particular contest involving Mandurah was far from as exhausting as the EIU one.

It is of course difficult to bring objectivity into something which is largely personal and subjective and one can disagree with the criteria which are used but it is an attempt at least. Note that the EIU survey is about liveability not best or happiest.
