Default Mandurah - best in the country for employment

Worried about finding a job in Mandurah? Shouldn't be a problem according to the article on the front of today's local paper (unless you're in I.T. that is, we could do with some big computer firms moving here).

Mandurah tops jobs report
Thursday, 27 November 2003

MANDURAH has had a turn around on all previous years, being the best performing regional centre in the country when it comes to jobs and population growth.
An Australian Local Government Association study of 64 regional centres in Australia showed Mandurah ahead of other prime centres including Cessnock and Shellharbour in NSW and Mitchell, Ballarat and Greater Bendigo in Victoria.
The State of the Regions study looked at centres' ability to overcome economic difficulties and generate employment by attracting skilled workers, selling services and providing good facilities.
Results were measured on their improvement on past performance.
The study found that, based on population growth of 20.8 per cent and employment growth of 41.4 per cent over five years, Mandurah rated highest with a net 20.6 per cent increase in job creation.
Mandurah Mayor Keith Holmes said the study was great news, especially considering Mandurah's high unemployment history.
"Any improvement, particularly one of this magnitude is one we welcome," Mayor Holmes said.
"It reflects the amount of work put in to promote the region and its economic development by the Peel Development Commission, particularly Peter Reading, the Chamber of Commerce, Business Enterprise Centre and Mandurah City."
Strategies such as marketing of the city, putting on events, encouraging developers and builders to employ local workers and projects such as the Mandurah Ocean Marina contributed.
Other WA regions in the top 10 included Wyndham-East Kimberley at six and Roebourne at eighth.
