This was when Mandurah was an old sleepy place. Crabbing is just a distent memory now. Still some around but not like before.

Thats sad to hear....but not unexpected...unfortunatly...
I remember wading through mud as a kid that was knee deep....and you could just walk along and pick them up 2 at a time...
Hmmm...maybe it was us that depleted the Muddie population?? :scared:

Nice to hear positive things about Mandurah, we are in the process of trying to immigration at the moment. My husband is an electrician, looking at the amount of development at the moment we are hoping that there is plenty of electrical work around Mandurah, any ideas?

Of course, that will be New Year's Eve 2004 (this thread was started last year!). There will also be a Christmas Pageant to look forward to at the foreshore, usually held around 7th December each year.

Crabbing is still a big part of life for many folk around here. The fisheries dept. issues you with a measuring tool because you have to chuck back any crabs below a certain size, and there is a limit to the number you can take away on each trip. Patrols are sent out to catch people and fine them on the spot for illegal catches. One chap died a few months ago when he waded a little too far out into the estuary with a bucket full of crabs hanging around his neck; as the tide came in he couldn't swim to safety because of the weight of water in the bucket and sadly drowned before his mates could get to him.
If you like eating crab and other seafood, there are plenty of restaurants around here offering a tempting selection. Having never lived on the coast in my life, it has made a nice change ordering from the different fish menus (even if you aren't quite sure what you're getting). The kids have tried crab, shark, squid, lobster and others since we've been here.
