Default Manchester

I've noticed in a few department stores in Australia, signs saying 'Manchester'. Can anyone shine any light on this? I know Manchester as being large city in the North of England. I think it may be connected with bedding or material.

yes you are spot on, it is the bedding and linen/ towels etc section. It's cause manchester traditionally was famous for textiles

Anywhere near the old Cotton Mills ? I remember them well, exporting all that cotton stuff down under, in boxes with "Manchester" stamped on the side

Maybe the recipients didn't realise it meant from Manchester, and instead thought that the contents were called "Manchester"

Not sure about that, but my loo has a picture on the wall, of an original toilet made by Thos Crapper & Co

Gets some interesting comments, like, "so that's where the word comes from"
