nice area lived in mackay for 4 months! loved it , rentals are on the expensive side! looking at $300 at the cheapest for 3 bed 1 bath !! but its worth it !! sub tropical climate '' 3 months of hot humid weather'' 9 of really good weather!'' you've got retail parks, shopping malls mcdonalds, hungry jacks ''burger king'' everything you expect here and more!! lots of beaches and parks for the kids! look at andergrove, beaconsfield, lamberts beach, bucasia, for rentals !! 1 hr 45 mins north is airlie beach we went every weekend!! nice big lagoon style pool and beaches with boat access to the whitsunday islands!!! fantastic 74 islands various sizes!! there is some brits in mackay but not many ''the real ozz'' nice new marina development! drive along the breakwater park up at the end and look for turtles whlie you fish !!! cant ask for any more!!!!!

They have been in uproar over the rentals there recently as the mining people have been coming into Mackay to rent pushing out locals and making it very hard to find a decent rental especially one of good value. It got to the point where they had bought in porta homes for people. Nice place though, has everything you need and a busy little place with heaps of job prospects. Climate wise it isn't that bad, typical Queensland weather. If you want decent beaches head up towards Dolphin Heads and Eimeo, stay away from Blacks Beach though as the creek comes in there along with the crocs

Agree though nice place to hop across to the WhitSundays to have a nose and of course the Barrier Reef is accessible from there as well.

The Pioneer River runs through the place and this is where the coal gets shipped out where it is meets the ocean, so you will see massive ships on the horizon waiting to come in every now and then. The town itself has everything you need and is a popular spot for people that find the Far North too humid as the weather is slightly cooler there.
